Acronis Backup for VMware 9.0 - Exchange error - Not sql admin alert

Thread needs solution

Our exchange backups are getting the following error message:

Error code: 3

Fields: $module : C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis\vmProtect\Windows Agent\vmms.exe

The obvious answer is to make the account that the backup uses a "sql admin" but I'm not having much luck in finding out how to do this in Exchange. Any suggestions?

Hi John,

If you enable application-aware backup processing for the VM then all supported applications metadata is tried to be collected. So it looks like your Exchange machine is also hosting some SQL database which is inaccessible (not enough permissions) with the specified user account. You should check the following KB article which describes how to check the proper user permissions on SQL server: http://kb.acronis.com/content/45234

Another thing is to check the "Skip metadata collection" option on the 4th step of the backup wizard (edit your existing backup task) and select SQL there, so that this application is skipped. Note that this will work only if you have 10007 build of Acronis Backup for VMware installed. Another important thing is to make sure you don't have outdated (older build) Acronis Backup Agent installed inside the VM (that's the agent installed from .msi which can be extracted from the main installation package). I've seen case when "skip metadata collection" option didn't work with 10007 build and failed with the exact same error as you quoted because there was an outdated agent installed inside the VM. Note that this agent is required _only_ if you have UAC enabled, so it can be safely uninstalled from the VM if UAC is disabled.

If nothing of the above helps, then you should contact our support team for assistance.

Thank you.
