Appliance network connections drop

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I'm busy with testing VMProtect 8 as a POC.
We're using ESXi 5.1 on a single Proliant DL380 G7 with local storage. vCenter is not used.
We're running 11 VM's of which a couple are in the same VLAN as the VMProtect appliance.
For some reason once a while (interval varies from 5 to 15 minutes) the network connection to the ESX host drops. The same behaviour is visible when I connect to the web interface via a laptop, the web GUI times out. The default vmxnet 3 adapter is being used.
Servers (w2k8r2) in the same VLAN as the appliance can connect to the ESXi host and never have any interruptions, so it seems to be something that specifically has to do with the appliance. ESXi host and appliance reside in the same VLAn by the way.
I tried redeploying and another VLAN, same problem remains.
Via the console I started a ping and you can actually see that the appliance loses connectivity. The interrupts are more frequent when actually (try to) do a backup.

Tried looking up similar cases, none found unfortunately.

Does anybody have a clue what can cause this?

rgds.

Jochem

Hi Jochem,

Such symptoms may be observed if there is an IP addresses conflict, i.e. the appliance has IP address which is already assigned to some other machine in network (may be you have 2nd appliance and assigned the same IP to it). Do you use static IP addressing? It looks like an issue with the network configuration on the appliance side, so I'd first of all tried assigning a different IP to it to see how it works.

Thank you.

Hi Vasil,

you were right. There was an IP conflict.
Still not sure what device is using it, but we'll find out. Whatever it is, it blocks icmp.
Once again, when looking to hard, you miss the ovious stuff:)

Thanks!
