Bare-Metal ESXi Recovery Bootable Media freezes halfway

Thread needs solution

We're in the process of replacing one of our ESXi servers with newer hardware.

Running Acronis Backup for VMware build 9.0.10007

So I decided to take the opportunity to try a real life bare metal restore of the ESXi Backups we've done, and gotten stuck.

I used the Bootable Media Builder to create a bootable disk to start the restore. It will boot up to the screen where it asks to enter the recovery program, and then I get an Acronis Splash Screen with a bunch of patent numbers, and a few minutes later the screen goes blank like it's starting to load something else, and just get's stuck there. I've let it run for a couple hours, and it appears to just be stopped.

I've tried both USB and CDROM boot drive, and I've tried both "Linux-Like representation" and "Windows-like representation", and I get the same thing every time.

How to do get a working boot disk, because it appears I'm currently dead in the water if something really does fail.

Hi Martin,

I will send you a private message with link to .iso with possible fix (it will be a x64bit-based media which may work) and instructions on how to proceed if it doesn't help.

Thank you.

Acronis Backup for VMware Program Manager

Vasily, I PM'd you more details, but wanted to update the forum that this x64 based media did appear to work in my case.

In case it's relevant to anyone else, the particular hardware involved was a Dell PowerEdge R720 server.

Vasily,
I need to bump this. Unfortunately on Friday I realized that my ESXi servers are running 5.5, and so while the Build 9767 build ISO you sent me will boot, it won't restoe an ESXi 5.5 backup.

Any chance you have an ISO for Build 10007 yet?
The forums were down Friday, so I sent a request in to Support, but so far they have only come back with a link to the media builder, which won't generate anything but 32 bit media on any system I have.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Martin,

Luckily I have an .iso which should help (just created for a different case, but it includes what you need). Please check private message with the link and notes.

Thank you.

I have this exact same issue. The new bootable media creator results in the same experience, eventually boots to a blank screen. The old media I have works and boots, but cannot restore since I am running later version of esxi. What is the final result of this? Is there a fix?

Hi Peter,

I will send you a link to the customized .iso shortly in a private message. This .iso should work properly and we'll incorporate the same fixes into the next version of Acronis Backup for VMware.

Thank you.

Thanks for this; unfortunately it still results in a blank screen after the splash screen, during loading.
