CreateSnapshot not allowed in current state.
Hi,
When I try to do a backup of one of my machines I get this error:
Failed to perform the requested operation.

I get a couple more messages but pretty much all of them end with: "Awaiting task 'CreateSnapshot' has failed. Reason: The operation is not allowed in the current state"
Except these:
"SOAP fault code: '12', Description: 'The object has already been deleted or has not been completely created', Detail: 'No details.'"
and
"Error occurred while running the backup and recovery engine."
I found this kb on vmwares site: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cm…
But it didn't help.
I have rebooted the VPS, rebooted the host, rebooted vCenter, restarted hostd and vpxa, reinstalled vmware tools but nothing helps.
There's no problem when backing up the other VPSs on the same host and I can't figure out what is wrong here.
Is there anyone that has had the same issue and know how to fix it?
The backups has never worked on this machine but I can't do a reinstall of the OS or anything like that.
Right now I've been doing backups with the Windows Server Backup but I really need to get Acronis to work here as this is the most important server of them all..
Thanks,
-Patric

Thanks for the fast reply.
I check and the Vmware Tolls installation was already complete. I thought that I would try to reinstall it but now it's stuck on "Initiated VMware Tools install or upgrade." and I can't click "End VMware Tolls Install", I just the the error "The operation is not allowed in the current state".
However, I attached the .vmx and the vmware.log files.

Hi Patric,
The vmware.log doesn't contain any evidences of the snapshot attempt, which means that this attempt was rejected on earlier stages. The hostd.log should contain more details. Can you please attach it too? It can be captured from /scratch/log/ directory by connecting to the host via WinSCP over SSH, i.e. SCP session?
P.S. the .vmx shows some PCI passthrough device attached to the VM, though it's unclear whether it can be the cause (that's the only suspicious part in .vmx).
Thank you.

The PCI PassThrough is just a NIC that we need passthough on, we recently did this and the backup has been the same even after we configured it.
I attached the hostd.log, I saw some information about the Snapshot but I can't really understand it.
EDIT:
To be more exact I did a "tail" on hostd.log while trying to do a backup and I got this:

Hi Patric,
Looks like the answer is in this thread and it is related to some device attached to the system (disks in independent persistent state or physical RDM mode for example): https://communities.vmware.com/message/2084630
From your hostd.log:
"2015-04-22T14:34:51.736Z [502C2B70 warning 'Vmsvc.vm:/vmfs/volumes/53dd9c5e-2189c4ed-4388-40a8f020b1d4/Elvira4/Elvira4.vmx' opID=67acaabc-b2 user=vpxuser] State Transition (VM_STATE_ON -> VM_STATE_CREATE_SNAPSHOT) not allowed for this Vm"
That's exactly the same error as discussed in the above linked thread.
Thank you.

Thanks for the link, I just found it too. However I don't really understand what persistens and nonpersistent means.
If I look under each virtual hard disk under properties for the VPS the "Independent" checkbox is Not checked and therefore none of the options there can be used (persistent and nonpersistent). This is the default as I have never done anything here for any VPS.
Or is it my NIC that's configured on PassThrough that the problem here even though I didn't have any problems before I made it passthrough?

Hi Patric,
Yes, if the disks are not independent then likely that PCI passthrough setting on NIC is causing the problem. I'd tried to disable passthrough for NIC and then attempted to create snapshot manually from vSphere (with quiesced=on, memory=off parameters) to confirm this theory.
Thank you.

Oddly it seems to be working now.. I must have had some other problem with the backup before the passthrough then.
I just get an error about file exclusion not working but I just found some info about that.
Thank you very much for the excellent support!
