deleting recovery point from local archive while copying to online storage

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I have a 230 GB size VM being backup to local disk (VM appliance) and being copied to Online storage. The schedule is everyday. Since there was a problem with the archive on the online storage, the archive on the online storage had been deleted. Therefore, I had to copy all 250 GB (the archive size is about 250 GB including about 29 recovery points) back to online storage. To do this, I executed the "copy to online" task manually and it took about 4 days to finish the copy. While VMP9 was copying from the local archive to online, I saw the scheduled backup task was executed (once a day). As the scheduled task executed, it deleted old recovery points from the local archive (as schedule set). However, the "copy to online" wasn't finished, yet. After the "copy to online" finished, I compared the recovery points in the Local archive and Online, the 4 deleted recovery points in local archive were exist in Online's archive. Here my questions:

- Since 4 of the oldest recovery points were deleted from local archive while they were being copied to online, will the online archive be good?
- how does VMP9 handle this?

Thanks,
Aldous

Hi Aldous,

The 4 recovery points deleted from the local archive will remain on online archive until the next synchronization event, i.e. until the 2nd destination task runs again. Then these 4 recovery points will become subject to deletion. That's of course assuming that retention rules are the same for 1st and 2nd destination. Note that you can have different retention policy for primary and secondary destinations so you may have different sets of recovery points in both destinations.

Thank you.
