Dear Vasily,
the mailserver is a virtual machine in an ESX server, which during its backup be acronis for vmware becomes unresponsive. Why?

Hi Pantelis,
Likely the VM becomes unresponsive during snapshot removal process which is totally maintained by VMware itself (Acronis Backup for VMware only sends a request to remove the snapshot, but this process itself is fully handled on VMware side). Normally this should not happen and the unresponsiveness is caused by improper setup of the vSphere environment (some hardware fine tuning is required). It makes sense to contact VMware support and describe the symptoms (VM becomes unresponsive during snapshot removal process) in order to resolve the issue.
Thank you.

Dear Vasily,
this only happens with one specific VM, which I used to backup without issues until 2 weeks ago. All other VMs which include heavier loaded machines are backed up without becoming unresponsive. I'm afraid that Vmware is not responsible for this.

Hi Pantelis,
You should check the stage of the backup which corresponds VM unresponsiveness - if it is happening on VMware snapshot creation OR deletion stage then the problem is definitely related to VMware (our product is NOT injecting any additional actions into this process). If it is happening on some other stages, such as in the middle of data transfer or on backup preparation stage (assuming that you have enabled application-aware backup), then you should contact Acronis support team with the following details:
1) The backup log from Acronis Backup for VMware interface
2) Any clues on what changes were done to the environment 2 weeks ago (before the problem started)
3) Windows Event logs from the mail server which correspond the backup attempt
4) Listing of files from the folder of the VM on the datastore (through Datastore Browser available in vSphere Client). There can be some undeleted delta files there which require consolidation (right-click on VM->Snapshot->Consolidate)
Thank you.
