Exchange 2007 Incremental Size

Thread needs solution

Hi All

Just a quick question I hope, we are backing up exchange 2007 (SBS2008) using VMP8 Build 8184, I'm wondering why the incremental is sometimes so big? They were large on VMP7 too.

A Full backup of the SBS2008 VM is 150GB which is our largest VM but the daily incremental can range from 600MB to 20GB which makes is quite hard to copy over our WAN in the time we have when the incremental hits 5GB+. The Exchange Stores are 45GB is total, I'm guessing the Exchange Maintenance (Online Defrag) could be causing a large CBT change but I'm not sure.

On our old Backup Software the daily incremental was 300-1000 MB what is manageable and normal "Shared" data is 300 - 500 MB change (AHSAY Backing using InFile Delta)

Can I see what files/blocks have changed according to CBT, what are other people seeing. I know the VM Backup is different compared to Standard Application only backup but the size of the VM data is causing a problem. We aren't seeing this kind of data change is any other VM.

Thanks

Nigel

Hello Nigel,

Thank you for posting.

You are right, it is possible the Exchange Maintenance is causing a large CBT change, unfortunately, it is difficult to determine if this is the case via the forum and I would recommend contacting our Support team for this.

To localize the issue would it be possible to disable CBT in More Options, please check this screenshot for details. We will be able to determine if the defragmentation is causing this issue.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.
