how acronis backup decide the order of VMs being backup

Thread needs solution

Hi,

Each of my backup task includes multiple VMs. Is there any way that I can control the sequence of the VM being backup? I understand that there is no option to set the order but if you can explain how the software decide the backup sequence?

Thank you,
Aldous

Hi Aldous,

The VM backup order within a backup task is defined by InstanceUUID property of the VMs. The VMs are processed in alphabetic order depending on InstanceUUID. For example:

VM1 has InstanceUUID="503a4ecc-8315-dc06-e2d7-707e3ca86b9d"
VM2 has InstanceUUID="503a3fe5-a5ba-0684-bc6f-337b811cd796"

VM2 will be backed up first and VM1 will be backed up after that. If you change VM2 InstanceUUID to "503aafe5-a5ba-0684-bc6f-337b811cd796" (note the 5th symbol 'a' which is lower than '4'), then VM1 will be backed up first.

I have personally tested this way of affecting the VM backup order and it does work. There is one thing to note though: if you change InstanceUUID property for a VM, then this VM will disappear from a previously configured backup task (which identifies VMs by their InstanceUUIDs) and you'll need to edit the backup task and re-select the VM.

The instructions on how to change InstanceUUIDs manually can be found here: https://kb.acronis.com/content/36100 (see the screen shots under cut in the "solutions" section) or here: https://kb.acronis.com/content/32243 (solution C).

Thank you.
