LAN-Free backups on Windows Agent

Thread needs solution

How do I setup LAN-Free backups on the Windows Agent version of VMProtect? I have it setup but it is using the LAN to backup the data.

I have my iSCSI LUNs attached to the Windows server.

What else do I have to do?

Hello Brian,

Thank you for posting and welcome to our Forum.

Could you get back to me with additional information so that I can understand this issue better. Please let me know how did you determine that vmProtect 7 is using the LAN to backup the data instead of the iSCSI.

Please save application logs - Save logs to file and post them here.

Looking forward to your reply and if you have additional questions please let me know.

Thank you.

Hi, I think I'm having the "Brian problem".

I've installed vmprotect 7 as Windows Agent on a Phisical Machine, running VMware vCenter 5 on Windows Server 2008 R2: it is directly connected via FC to the SAN where the VMs are stored. I prevously used VMware Consolidated Backup Framework to get full VM images directlly form the SAN, but now, with "vmfs5" it doesn't work anymore in "lan free" mode, so I'm valuating your product to upgrade the backup system.

I've configured a test incremetal backup job for 3 machines: it runs every 30 minutes (total storage: about 300 GB) but I find that the transfer rate to copy data is slow for a 4Gb/s Fiber Channel connection, so I think that the software is using LAN to copy data from SAN.

Can you please tell me how I can be sure that vmprotect is using "lan free" connection to the SAN?
I send you my logs in attachment.

Thanks in advance for your response...

Hello Francesco,

Welcome to our Forum, we're glad to greet you here.

Actually the logs you've kindly provided doesn't contain any useful information on the LAN-free. The issue might be related to the target location. Anyway we'll need additional logs to check it. Could you please do the following?

  1. Go to Start -> Run -> regedit
  2. Find there HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Acronis\Global\Configuration\ -> DebugTrace.
  3. Change the DebigTrace value to "1"
  4. Restart Acronis VmProtect Managed Machine Service
  5. Clear log
  6. Start the backup
  7. Send us the new log

This should shed the light onto the situation.

Let us know if you have any concerns or questions, we will be glad to help.

Thank you.

P.S. Forgot to mention: you can easily check whether LAN-free is working fine if you create a backup to the local drive, and check the traffic. It should be minimal (for coordination with vCenter only), and shouldn't include the size of the backup.

It will mean that LAN-free method is correctly used.

Thank you.
