Licensing confussion

Thread needs solution

Hi guys,

We've just purchased a copy of vmProtect 6 but I'm extremely confused over the licensing.

It states that it's per CPU and without any clarification of what was per CPU I assumed it was the number of instances/number of CPUs I was willing to assign to vmProtect.

When entering my licence, I see that this does not appear to be the case, in which case my question is a simple one, how the heck does this licencing system work between two servers?

I have funding for a single CPU copy, I'm backing up from a single server (though would have been nice to be able to backup some admin VMs on the other server) but what happens if I need to switch over to the second server in the event of a hardware failure? How do I manage the licences then, and how will this fit in with the replication feature of vmProtect 7? Will I even be able to use it with a single licence? I'm very, very confused by this and any clarification is much appreciated.

Hello Scribe,

Thank you for your post. Let me assist you with your question.

Hopefully this screenshot will answer your query, one physical CPU socket takes one license:

Our licensing is based on a number of CPUs in the physical infrastructure holding the virtual machines. Each CPU on the managed ESX host/cluster consumes a license.

If your host has 2 CPUs, you will need to have 2 licenses in order to backup this host.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.
