online storage interruptions

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I've opened a case to investigate my "backup to online cloud" issues. While I'm still waiting to resolutions, I have some questions:

1. What is the Acronis' maintenance policy for the cloud service? I mean, if Acronis need to do system maintenance for their online cloud service, will it be scheduled at certain date/time? OR, it will be any time? I would like to know the time window so that I can avoid to have any backup scheduled.

2. Is there any routine maintenance for Acronis Cloud service? what is the time window?

3. What will happen to vmprotect or what I should expect in case of the cloud service is down while a backup is running?

Thanks,
Aldous

Hi Aldous,

1. and 2. The cloud services maintenance is performed twice per month with the following schedule:

US1 Datacenter: Every 2nd Tuesday 2AM - 5AM EST (10:00 - 13:00 MSK)
US2 Datacenter: Every 2nd Tuesday 2AM - 5AM EST (10:00 - 13:00 MSK)
EU1 Datacenter: Every 2nd Tuesday 5AM - 8AM CET (07:00 - 10:00 MSK)

The next maintenance is planned for 3/19/2013 (tomorrow) and then goes in cycle of 2 weeks.

There can also be additional maintenances in case of emergency of course. Information about these "extra" maintenance events (if they occur) is distributed among our support team members.

3. In case the cloud service goes down while backup is in progress, the backup task will continue re-trying the backup operation in accordance with "Error Handling" settings (default= 5 retries with 30 seconds interval). If the number of retries/period is large enought to let the task running until maintenance is over, then the backup continues from the place where it was paused. During cloud services unavailability the task will remain running at the same percentage without transferring data (will look like hung up one) and will continue running normally after the cervices are back online.

Thank you.

Hi Vasily,

Thanks for the info.

1. and 2. during the maintenance, should I expect the backup failing (after retrying)?

3. If the backup failed in the middle, the backup may be partially written to the cloud. Will this cause corruption to the backup file? I've been having repeated issues. Once every few weeks, all the scheduled backup to the cloud failed. Next day when I restart the backup, some of them will failed to backup with error "Write error". (this is actually, the case I opened and currently being investigated by your support team). And, I was unable to remove any recovery point as well (also, write error). This is very very painful.

Thanks again,
Aldous

Hi Aldous,

1,2. In case the backup task reaches the re-tries limit during the maintenance period it will fail. Otherwise (if it lasts for more time than the maintenance) it should continue writing data into the archive and finish.
3. The backup failure in the middle just means that the data which had been written into the archive during this task execution life-time is not valid and will not be considered upon next backup attempt, which should not fail of course. Also thanks for the additional info, I've passed it to our support and dev. teams (your case as far as I can see is now being investigated by our developers).

Thank you.
