[Resolved] How to install VMware Tools?

Thread needs solution

I tried several times to install VMware Tools on the Virtual Appliance on an ESXi5 host with no luck (right click the virtual machine and select Guest -> Install/Upgrade VMware Tools). Is there any trick I don't know or is this a "known issue"??

Hello Mario,

Thank you for opening the thread regarding this question

I regret to inform you that this Forum is dedicated to Acronis Products, and we will not be able to provide you with support to VMware issues. We would strongly recommend you to contact VMware support themselves, as apparently this issue is important and requires investigation.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you.

Hello Yana,

The Virtual Appliance is supplied by Acronis and so I guess it's nothing VMWare will care for. And didn't I read somewhere that vmProtect is not certified by VMWare by now?? So how shall I ask them for support??

Mario

Virtual appliance runs customized version of linux (like a bootable media), so I doubt it's possible to install VMware tools there.

Hello dev-anon,

I presume the same, bit so why does Acronis advise on page 10 of their AVMP6 user guide the following ???

4.1.3 How to install VMware Tools

Acronis vmProtect requires the installation of VMware Tools. To install the VMware Tools:

-Run the VMware Infrastructure/vSphere Client.

-Connect to the ESX server.

-Select the virtual machine and run the guest operating system.

-Right click the virtual machine and select Guest -> Install/Upgrade VMware Tools.

-Follow the onscreen instructions.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is that just meant for a virtual windows maschine??

Yana, can you please reply hereto.

Hello all!

I would like to clear the things up: the VMware tools are required to be installed inside the guest OS of the VM which you plan to back up. This is necessary to support proper quiescence of the file system (utilize VSS support) + support files/folders exclusion.

On the other side Acronis vmProtect 6.0 Virtual Appliance is running on customized Linux-based OS and it does not support installation of VMware tools inside. There is simply no need for this.

The VMware tools installation instructions in the User Guide are intended to be used only for VMs which you plan to back up.

Thank you.

Thank you Vasily for the clarification. Nonetheless it's a bit misleading in the user guide and so you should amend this part of the guide.

Hello Mario,

Thank you for the note. I have instructed our tech writers to correct the 4.1.3 topic in the User Guide and we will update it with the proper information. The User Guide as well as web help contents are updated constantly and it's important for us to take care of all possible inconsistencies in it. Once again thank you for the report!

Thank you.

on the other hand if the acronis vm does not have vmware tools installed is also a bad thing. please ask the developers to include either A version of the vmwaretools or solve this with using the correct api's for creating an appliance. for instance now it will give a warning and if you look at other vendors you will see "vmwaretools: notrunning (3rd-party/Independent)" even the vmware VDR appliance shows this. and the acronis appliance shows "vmwaretools:running (unsupported)" a minor thing but could eliminate this.

Thanks

The appliance does have them installed out of the box. Only most of the time they are out dated. Only ones that can update them is Acronis themselfs.

it would be nice if they made it look like:

"vmwaretools: notrunning (3rd-party/Independent)"
