Restoring a mounted VM from backup (NAS) back to my host (localally)?

Thread needs solution

As above. We had some issues with a VM. Managed to restore a backup and mount it from the NAS onto the vmware 5.5 host.
I now need to get this mounted vm saved and attached back to the host.

How exactly?

Thanks

Hi,

I assume you are asking for the process on how to "finalize" mounted VM (VM which is Run from backup) on permanent storage, so that it is not dependent on Acronis agent. In the current version the process is a manual one which requires some downtime (in the next version we're adding a "Finalize mounted VM" feature with no downtime required):

First option:

Migrate the mounted VM to production storage using VMware Storage vMotion feature. If it's not possible then check the other options:

Second option:

1) In Web Console go to View->Mounted VMs list
2) Selected the mounted VM and click "Umount and Save" button - it will save all the changes made to the mounted VM into the archive it was mounted from (another incremental recovery point will be added)
3) Restore the VM from this new recovery point.

Third option:

In case the above procedure is impossible (the VM is not shown under mounted VMs list due to Acronis agent reboot) do the following to restore the VM and to apply changes made to the mounted VM to the restored one:

1) Restore the machine selecting the _same_ recovery point it was originally mounted from. (!) Uncheck the Power on target VM when recovery finished box in the additional recovery options.
2) Make a snapshot of the recovered powered off machine.
3) In Datastore browser open the datastore containing delta-files of the mounted VM (it should be in the folder on the datastore which you specified in Run VM from Backup wizard) and download all *.vmdk-files (select them -> right-click -> download). Two files with similar names will be downloaded for each drive (*.vmdk and *-delta.vmdk).
4) Note file names of all virtual drives in the settings of the mounted machine and in the settings of recovered machine. Rename each downloaded *-delta.vmdk file of mounted machine into corresponding *-00001-delta.vmdk of the recovered machine.
5) In Datastore browser open the datastore containing recovered VM and upload all *-00001-delta.vmdk files (created at step 4.) overwriting the current ones (created at step 2.).
6) Now you can power on the recovered machine, it should contain all changes made to the mounted one.
7) Remove the snapshot (created at step 2.) from the restored machine to commit delta back into the base disk

Thank you.
