Setup Questions/Trial Testing

Thread needs solution

Hi Team,

I have a problem regardless the incremental backups: Under the backup tasks > step 3 I got 2 options: Keep one back up file or create back up separately.

Q1: If I keep one backup it would be always full or incremental? I cant see any options there.
Q2: If I keep backup files separately would be always full or incremental? Also i see the option to store next backup file in "second" location - how would that work if I have a daily backup configured?
Q3: I can "check" backup for consistency - but only result it returns - "success", thats the only result I can have to check my backup or I am missing smth?

Thx in advance.

Also could you please tell me what the limitation on the VM included into backup is and how many backup tasks I can run without any impact on the performance?

TY!!!!

Hi D P,

The option you are referring to basically just defines the physical format of the archive, i.e. how it will be placed onto the storage (as one .tib file or as multiple .tib files). The "one file" format is a more advanced one and allows retention rules to remove any recovery point which becomes outdated. With "multiple files" format it is only possible to delete whole chains of full+dependent incremental archives (which is why there is an option to define how often to create full backups when you use "multiple files" format). Therefore the answers will be as follows:

1) With "one file" setting there is a full created upon first run and all subsequent runs there is incremental backup added into the same physical file
2) With "multiple file" setting the full will be created every 30 days by default, which can be changed to every X days or every X backups. The 2nd destination option practically synchronizes the recovery points from the 1st location with the recovery points in the 2nd location. These 2 archives are independent.
3) The validation functionality checks the archive for consistency and ensures that you will be able to recover from validated recovery point/archive. An alternative check for archive consistency is to Run VM from Backup manually for example (i.e. mount the VM and ensure that it boots up properly).

Thank you.

Hi Vasily,

+1 for providing me with the complete how-to. Russian IT rocks as usuall =)

I got one small question - it seems that trial I was taking got expired (only 15 days?) - is there any way to get new trial, as I am kinda half way testing the vmprotect but already compared backup with nakivo (btw nakivo lost the battle with vmprotect=)) ) The only thing I need is more time to test replication.

TY in advance guys.

Hi D P,

From your account management interface on our website it's not possible to get another trial. This can be done through the account manager responsible for your region (or sales manager assigned to your account). I have sent a request to him so you should get contacted soon with further instructions.

Thank you.

Thx Vasily,

Was not contacted by manager - but got vmprotect reinstalled on new vm and it worked with same trial as i expected. So thx anyway =)

Now I face with one of the biggest problems for my production - and it seems it is by design: vmprotect does not support Exchange 2013 It is sad as it does not cover our plans for migration for this year then... Would it be supported some day?

Also I have not tested backup of Win 2012 is it supported or not?

Cheers.

Hi D P,

As far as I have checked there was an e-mail sent to address which is recorded in your forum profile (the same address is stored in our salesforce database), so it might be still there. Can you check it out?

What concerns Exchange 2013 support - indeed it is currently missing and one of the major problems with it is that there is no publicly available MAPI with support for Exchange 2013 from Microsoft. This API is used for granular recovery of Exchange items from the database and while it is missing our efforts are quite limited. Microsoft is planning to release the new version of MAPI within the next several months (no exact date at the moment) and in the mean time we are looking for some workarounds, but again it's hardly possible to predict when we can find a solution. Probably we'll have limited functionality (recovery of just Exchange databases for Exchange 2013 without mailboxes/e-mails recovery) in 9th version, but it's not yet guaranteed.

What concerns Windows 2012 - it is supported with vmProtect 8 Update 1 (8184 build). You can install Windows Agent onto this OS and back up VMs with Windows 2012 guest OS.

Thank you.

Many thanks Vasily!
