unable to create stable backups + unable to access file <unspecified filename> since it is locked

Thread needs solution

do other people also have many problems with vmprotect 6?

i have a few esx boxes with a few NAS boxes but i can sometimes make a full backup. but thats it.
i get errors in the backups or validating the backups.. i use mostly cifs targets..

but why i am writing this. i am find out that now i have run a few times the backups.. when they failed
i get snapshots that keep not being removed. and also if i remove them manually now i get i need to consolidate my disks.. and when i try to consolidate i get in vsphere "unable to access since it is locked> now i am a lto of vm's that needs consolidation and have possible problems.. ... so i make backups cant even restore them and possible correct my vm's..

not a good situation

i use vpshere 5 and vmprotect 6 together with a netapp and a readynas 3200 with NFS storage and i use another readynas 3200 to actually backup my vm's to.

could anyone share their experience.. and purhaps even check their vm's in vcenter purhaps they have the same problem..

ok i got rid of the consolidation errors by making a normal snapshot.. and then manually deleting the snapshot.. NOTE: using the delete all did not work.. i specially needed to delete the singe manual snapshot and then the error in vcenter went away.

but still i have the problemesn with the backups.. i do have an case open allready with support and will post here an update if i know more

well with me i still stay away from CIFS as backup.. somehow sometimes with some NAS brands it keeps getting buggy.
now on vmprotect i need to test. but i guess for people who have this try doing the same cifs inside a Windows Cifs vm and see if you still have the problem.. if so.. then its your nas firmware or simply the nas. but still it can also be a bug because i cant image many nas systems are buggy and only acronis has these strange problems ;)

Are you running your VM's on the Readynas? Or just using the Readynas as a backup appliance?

I am pretty familiar with Readynas... have used them since they were Infrant before Netgear bought them. Either way... I don't use them to run the machines but I do use a Readynas 1100 for backup. We use Esxi 4.0 U1 with VMProtect6.

We have had some issue with VMP6 not mounting the VMDK and then not removing the snapshot. We have also seen where VMP6 does not unmount the VMDK and it shows as an attached hard disk even after the jobs are done.

We are testing VMP7 and are seeing less issues at this point. Still having some issues.... but seems more stable and reliable. We have been testing for about 23 days and will be making a decision in another 14 days on whether or not to buy the product.

I believe vmProtect 7 is available as an update which might solve your problem.

dear vwemil.

esxi 4.0 u1, i would strongly suggest to update esx! i was also in the same situation, had similar errors and doubt about acronis vmprotect, i used esx 4.0 patch 1 and i could not even perform a normal stable backup.. most of the time it all went wrong. only after i upgraded all started to improve.

if you have cifs trouble to write backups to. then test it with the backups inside an attached vmdk in the vmprotect appliance of vcenter server that is how i use it how, i have a few new cifs jobs running today so i hope they will finish correctly

for me now acronis is performing very good. (besides the exchange aware backup and restore they really need to fix it ;)
considering the budget/price, feature comparison and best all round use of vmprotect vs veeam vs other then in my opinion vmprotect wins it clearly especially with the online backup integration for me a clear winner.

i use 2x readynas 3200 systems these house my tier2 and dev vm's. (50+ vm's) with nfs writers to the max and only using it as nfs box it does a good job. altho cifs with Ad integration is buggy so i moved cifs away from it and moved it back inside an vm ;)

ps: do you use vcenter? as i understood for esx 4.0 patch 1 (not sure for esxi) but when you upgrade to 5.0 vcenter then all your esx hosts would purple screen ;) so first update to patch 3. http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cm…

note: i did not test if the latest patch level would improve the backups, i went to esxi 5 and then found the backups performing ok.
