Very slow VM replication in Acronis vmProtect 8

Thread needs solution

I'm running vmProtect 8 on a Windows Server 2008 server with vCenter server. It has 8gb of ram provisioned to it, and is on a Dell r720 Server with 128gb ram. Plenty of machine.

When replicating VM's from one host to another over a 1gb connection, I am only seeing speeds of 6mb/s average. Our last replication of 140gb took 23 hours to complete.

This is going from host to host.

When I am replicating data from a host to/from our EMC VNX5300 SAN which has dual 10gbit connections to each server, the speed is also just as slow. Our testing has shown very fast speeds. Also, if I clone or move a datastore through vSphere, the transfers are very fast.

What can I check within vCenter to speed this up? It's useless to me as is if it takes an entire 24 hour period to do something that shouldn't take more than 2-3 hours. We are transferring approximately 400gb worth of VM's/Datastores during the replication.

Hi Michael,

The performance (either backup or replication) mainly depends on the way vmProtect is installed and what type of access it has to the replicated/backed up VMs virtual disks. In case of Windows Agent the fastest speed can be achieved by using direct SAN access mode which implies connecting the SAN volumes (where source replicated VMs reside) to this Windows machine. In case SAN mode is unavailable the NBD mode is used (network access) which means that the traffic first goes from the source host to vmProtect Agent, and then from vmProtect Agent (Windows machine) to the target host. It may be the case that there are multiple network interfaces (VPN may be) connected to your vCenter machine and one of them is slow. In order to reveal the issue and localize it, it would be really worthy to install vmProtect as Virtual Appliance onto the source host (so that it has direct access to virtual disks in hot-add mode), connect it to proper fast network and check the replication speed. Depending on the results of this check you will be able to detect the bottleneck.
