Is there a best practice guide for backing up VM's?

We are currently backing up daily out of hours in 1 single job/file, and retaining for 30 days. We also backup every weekend (same VM's) for retention, currently 36 months.

We also backup exchange, but not impressed with how it works/fails.

Is it better to split each VM up into its own job?
