vmProtect 8 and VMWare backup warning #32861The following virtual machines do not have VMware Tools installed

Thread needs solution

Hi, We're testing out vmProtect8 with some basic vm's we created on a server running the latest VMWare ESX and vCenter. Everything looks good when setting up but we get warnings on all our backups:

The following virtual machines do not have VMware Tools installed: 'TestCo3 - MPU - 1.1.0.1133'. Snapshots of these virtual machines may be inconsistent and source file exclusion is not supported.
Additional info:
--------------------
Error code: 32861
Module: 114
LineInfo: 28314c961de7d314
Fields:
Message: The following virtual machines do not have VMware Tools installed: 'TestCo3 - MPU - 1.1.0.1133'. Snapshots of these virtual machines may be inconsistent and source file exclusion is not supported.

I didn't find any mention in the quick setup in the Acronis documentation of having VMware tools needing to be installed for backups to work. We're concerned about having to install VMTools on each vm and changing our testing environment as we are constantly re imaging our VM's for testing and this would be set back for us. Is this just a warning or are the backups not really functional?

Thanks!

Alex

I think the backups will still work, with the limitations and caveats in the warning.
I would recommend that you install VMWare tools on your machines anyway, there really isn't any reason not to, and you need it for the VMXNet3 high performance network adapters.

As an aside, I think the "VMWare tool Detection" mechanism they use is not entirely foolproof - I got the same warning on a VM that definitely did have the tools installed, so this may be a bug.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, on some of our VM's we're running our own Ubuntu based software that we are constantly debugging and we re image them often. Having to add the VM tools every time we re image is not practical. We sometimes do several in a day. I'll test the backups next and see how they restore to see if they are functional. Thanks for the info.

Hi aretivov,

We've got similar complaints before and decided to move the warning about missing VMware tools has been into information trace (it will become an information message instead of warning), so the task will not be marked as warning in the nearest update for Acronis vmProtect 8 which we plan to release shortly.

Thank you.
