vMProtect best practises - Goal : Rock solid/low maintenance backups

Thread needs solution

Anyone care to share their experiences/configuration of vMprotect that works well for them. Would also be interested in Acronis contributing as well.

The outcome we want to get to is "Rock Solid/very low maintenance backups from vMprotect".

Our backup config.
- 6 ESXi hosts across 3 sites (2/Site) with a vMprotect appliance in each location. ~ 30 vMs across the 3 sites.
- vMProtect appliance v7 backing up to QNAP NAS (via SMB). GBit/10 GBit network performance.

Looking for recommendations in getting to rock solid backup operation. Very interested in input in the following areas:
- Backup Destination: SMB, FTP, Local Folders (NFS presented to ESXi host)
- Deduping.
- CBT
- Backup type Legacy (Multiple files) vs New SIngle file format.
- Compression level.
- Splitting target VMs into separate backup groups to improve throughput.
- vM configuration tuning. Network card types, etc. Memory, etc.

THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Hello Greg,

Thank you for using Acronis software and your question in our forum.

Please accept my apologies for the late reply.

I want first to offer you our product online help, that contains the answers to most of your questions.

Find all supported backup locations here. On this page also you find the difference between archive types.

  • Online backup storages.
  • Recent Locations.
  • Local folders.
  • Network folders.
  • FTP servers.
  • SFTP servers.

You can find here, how to activate Deduplication.

You can find here, how to activate CBT usage.

Compression Level best usage is normal.

If you split, your VM's in separate groups depends on your system and performance. There is no direct way to calculate this. I suggest trying out. However, you can define a backup for each host in one job. This splits out to six backups if you are using the same destination.

With Acronis vmProtect 8 you have an speed optimized version. You should ensure, that the data store using for running the virtual appliance, should have free space at least the volume of the biggest to vmdk file, that have to be backed up.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.
