Backup cannot be restored or even opened with the Acronis Boot Stick

Thread needs solution

Hello Acronis Community,

we are a small company that uses Acronis Cyber Backup to backup two of our servers (both have the same version of Acronis). From time to time we check if our backups can be restored correctly. We do that with an Acronis Boot Stick (the one you can create out of the Acronis software itself).

Recently we have a problem with the backups of one of our servers. When using our Acronis Boot Stick the backup cannot be restored and isn't able to even show the backed-up Acronis files.
To get you a better understanding, I tell you what we do from the scratch:

  • According to our backup plan we create every two weeks an incremental backup and every month a full backup. Every backup is saved with a password. -> Acronis shows no errors with that backup. The backup files can be opened on our server with Acronis software without errors.
  • The backups gets saved on our NAS and an external drive connected to the NAS
  • Our Backup process:
    • Disconnect the external drive of our NAS (with our backup)
    • Connect it to our test server
    • Connect Acronis Boot Stick to our test server
    • Boot from Acronis Boot Stick -> "Manage this machine locally" -> "Recover" -> "Select Data..."
    • Then I browse to the directory of the external drive with the backups of the server and make a double click (the message "The selected location does not contain backed-up data" does NOT appear)
    • The picture "Server1.jpeg" appears:
      • a symbol of a printer (?) with rainbow colours and the name of the server
      • no "owner" or "locates on"
      • a size of the backup 635 GB (which is correct)
      • but no "backed-up data size"
    • When I double-click on this line to open the various backups I can normally choose from nothing happens. What is strange, too, is that there is no password prompt although it should be saved by a password.

I also attached the view of the backup files of our other server ("Server2.jpeg") that makes backups with Acronis Cyber Backup, too, for comparison. The differences are the following: It has another symbol, workgroup and owner are set and backed-up data size is not 0 bytes.

We would be very pleased if anyone had an idea what could be the problem or a solution!

Hello Rudolf!

We do that with an Acronis Boot Stick (the one you can create out of the Acronis software itself).

Do you mean that you download the bootable media image itself, or make one with the bootable media builder?

What build are you running?

Hello Peter

We download the .iso-Image from Acronis (Profile -> Downloads -> Extras -> Bootable Media -> Boot_media.iso) and make it a bootable media by using a USB stick and Rufus.

Why do you think that this is important?

Hello Peter

We are using the bootable Image of Acronis (Profile -> Downloads -> Extras -> Bootable media -> Boot_media.iso) and make it a bootable media by using an usb stick and Rufus.

But why do you think that this is important?

Because the image you can download AFAIK is linux based, whereas with the builder you can make a Windows based. It's probably not relevant in this case, but I'd try regardless.

Other things I'd try is to validate the backup in question and export it to make a copy, and see if it also shows the same error.

These backed up data size columns I never found useful. It's rarelly what I'd expect it to be and often it shows 0. I've just made an encrypted backup to see how it would be shown in bootable media and the archive backed up size is 0. It shows the correct size for the recovery point itself, otherwise it matches your Server2 picture.
