Exchange Application backup question ...

Thread needs solution

Hi,

we backup our Exchange 2016 (CU7) with a dedicated Acronis Backup Advanced (Build 9010) job which is configured with source "Complete Machine" and Application Backup "Microsoft Exchange". Works like a charm but it only creates incremental backups, not complete backups - is this a limitation of this type of job configuration?

I understand that "Complete Machine" is a full backup; we use this job type for our VM's ...

Thanks,

Erik

Hello Erik,

would you mind adding a couple of screenshots of the settings in the backup plan? When you select Entire machine as a source this doesn't necessarily means all backups in the chain will be full backups. Whether all backups in the chain will be full backups or a full + set of incremental backups depends on the backup schedule.

Thank you,

Good morning Ekaterina,

more details: Windows- and Exchange agent are installed on the Exchange 2016 server. We use this type of configuration to ensure that we backup the whole machine including application level backup of the databases. We use version 11 because its faster. Options are standard except performance and compression.

Wondering why the Status is "Not secured...?

Job is fine, but only incremental (40 Minutes; >2,5TB databases); Exchange backup status is ok (current date)

Many thanks,

Erik

Hello Erik,

The setup looks good to me. "Not protected" in this case means that the Exchange databases are currently not backed up with a separate plan on a db\mailbox level (you can protect Exchange as a part of your disk level backup additionally collecting the metadata for Exchange or create a dedicated plan only for DBs\mailboxes). Two methods are described in Protecting Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Exchange Server.

What you see when you click on "Montag bis Freitag"? The setting should be "Nur vollständig" to have a chain of full backups only.

Hi Ekaterina,

many thanks, that was the problem...

Exchange backup is fine now except that is painfull slow using version 12 ... ? I observed the job this weekend and wondering why the backup of the system drive was fast (>200MB/s), but when the job switches to the Exchange data drive (Full SSD) it goes down to <=60MB/s ...

Compression is normal, Performance is high, other parameters standard. Any suggestion? Is version 11 the only solution?

Many thanks

Erik

Hello Erik,

Sorry for not getting back earlier! If you have some time for investigation, I'd raise a support ticket for the performance issue. The format 12 has been developed to optimize performance, if the effect is opposite, Acronis engineers should investigate the cause for performance degradation.
