Activity 'Creating crash-consistent (non-VSS) snapshot' failed. The operation is not allowed in the current state.

Thread solved

I can't get a backup to work. Before, I had the "Creating application-consistent (VSS) snapshot" failed error so I turned off VSS. This is a VDI with PCI Passtrough (NVidia GP104GL video card). VMWare tools running (current). No idea what to do next. Thank you in advance.

Hello Bart,

welcome to Acronis forums!

Thanks for sharing your activity log here.

Since Acronis Backup creates a snapshot on VM using VMware tools, I recommend that you follow recommendations from this VMware KB article: https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1027707

Please also try reinstalling or updating your VMware tools to fix the issue. For more details please consult the following Acronis KB article (please do not be confused by a different error message, explanation and recommendations stay the same): https://kb.acronis.com/qsnapshot

Hello Maria,

I'm convinced that snapshotting will not be possible because of the PCI passtrough device. Is there another way to make a backup without using snapshots?

Hello Bart.

I recommend that you install a respective Agent for Windows/Linux inside that VM and create a separate backup plan for it. Thus, it would not use VMware snapshot but native Windows VSS or Acronis VSS.

Hello Maria,

So if I understand correctly I need to take the backup as if it was a physical machine?
I will try this approach, thank you.

Hello Bart.

Yes, you understood it right. You are welcome to share the outcome.

Hello Maria,

I installed the agent on the VDI yesterday and it backed up just fine. Thank you for the support!
