Can't install Acronis Backup 12.5 Update 5 due to a permissions bug

Thread needs solution

Had an issue where the API Gateway wouldn't start so the web console wouldn't connect. Decided to uninstall the application and run the CleanUp tool for Acronis Backup 12.5 (Update 4). Then I downloaded the latest Acronis Backup 12.5 (Update 5) and during installation I run into this blocker problem:

1: MSIGEN:GrantFullAccessToUser: adjust file security for path 'C:\ProgramData\Acronis' and user '.\ams user'.
1: MSIGEN:SetNamedSecurityInfo failed with ec = 5

1: MSIGEN:SendMessageToInstaller: started
1: MSIGEN:SendMessageToInstaller: MsiCreateRecord succeeded
1: MSIGEN:SendMessageToInstaller: MsiRecordSetStringW succeeded

1: MSIGEN:SendMessageToInstaller: message sent
1: Error 0x7f8200: Failed to enable write access to the directory.

The Windows version on this lab PC is Windows 10 Pro Version 2004 (OS build 19041.264).

The file permission on C:\ProgramData\Acronis seems to be reset every time the installer is tried.

Acronis NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE:(OI)(CI)(F)
        NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(OI)(CI)(F)
        BUILTIN\Administrators:(OI)(CI)(F)
        XXX\AMS User:(OI)(CI)(F)

The C:\ProgramData permission is

ProgramData BUILTIN\Administrators:(I)(OI)(CI)(F)
            NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(I)(OI)(CI)(F)
            BUILTIN\Users:(I)(OI)(CI)(RX)
            NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users:(I)(M)
            NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users:(I)(OI)(CI)(IO)(M)

Would appear the installer using the current logged in user account is unable to "adjust file security" with the ams user account because there's no read permission outside the few system accounts allowed and causes the installer to die.

I used an adminstrator account to use icacls to save the permission of C:\ProgramData and restore it to C:\ProgramData\Acronis. After running the Acronis installer the file permission is reset back to those 4.

This is an Acronis issue and should be fixed by Acronis.

Hello A.Yu,

welcome to Acronis forums!

We recommend that you open a case with Acronis Support Team since such issues should be investigated and reproduced by support engineers. Please prepare an installation log for sharing with engineers.

Thanks, a ticket was opened a few days earlier but I never received an e-mail confirmation so I thought it was ignored and came here for a last ditch support. I will try again.

Hello A.Yu!

I suggest you to try quick chat support options if your problem requires immediate attention. In my experience you'll recieve a fast(<30 mins) response and followup emails after.
