Replicated backup different size?

Thread needs solution

I have several backup plans that backup to two different locations. On completion I notice that the backup files are not the same size.

This is using Cyber Backup 12.5, running a full backup to two separate folder locations, one is local and the other is on a NAS.

I'd expect the two backup files to be the same size if this was true replication, have I misunderstood how this works?

I was also wondering why the sizes differ.
If I remember it right, the replication has different size due to different metadata and I also think that I was told that the replication is in reality a backup of the first.

Maybe one of the "officials" here can confirm or correct this.

Hello Oder Odonata,

Welcome to Acronis forums!

The backup archives in two different backup locations could differ in size if the number of copies stored there is different. It depends on the retention rules you set for each backup location and the replication schedule.

Hello Maria,

I think your answer tends more to the diretion of regarding the total size of all backup files in the storage locations.

If I understood Order correctly, he means that the size of a replicated tib(x) file differs from the size at the original location.

That's right. I have configured a backup plan to have 2 save locations, and I expected that the tibx backup file would be saved to both locations simultaneously or that the tibx file would be copied to the second location once the backup was complete.

This appears not to be working this way, and when the backup has completed, the 2 tibx files are not identical in size. The tibx file in the first save location was around 360Gb, and the file in the second location was around 400Mb larger.

The retention rules and schedule are identical for both locations, and the data would not have changed during the back up window, so I'm curious to know why the file sizes differ.

Hello Order Odonata.

In this situation, the sizes of these backup files could not be different until the retention rules on the first backup location are executed 1 or 2 extra times if failed on the second location.

Hello Maria,

sorry that I must conradict.

All (and I really mean ALL) of the files in the second location have different sizes.

Even if I setup a completely new plan where I backup some files, replicate them (same retention rules, all the same) the file size in the 2 locations differ.....

Hello Sven.

No, it does not work this way. It mounts an archive in the first backup location, searches and reads the original data in latest backups which is not present in replication backup location.

Even if I setup a completely new plan where I backup some files, replicate them (same retention rules, all the same) the file size in the 2 locations differ.....

We recommend investigating it with Acronis Support Engineers who can compare both archives and clarify the reasons of differences in sizes.
