restore vm error

Thread needs solution

I have a problem with restoring a backup, im using Acronis Cyber Protect license. Below are the error logs. Please help me resolve this issue.

The error typically indicates DNS issues in network: the machine which has Agent for VMware (either Agent for VMware(Windows) or Virtual appliance) installed cannot resolve the ESXi hosts names to IP addresses even if the vCenter hostname is accessible properly. The ESXi hosts names referred here match the hosts names shown in vSphere client when viewing vCenter infrastructure (e.g. the registration names of the hosts inside vCenter).

Please also check if there are open snapshots in the VM and if the snapshot tool is working. Create and delete manually a snapshot as a test: https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap-7mode-transition/san-host/task_dele…

If it fails there is an issue with the VM tools and you should fix it or contact VMware.

Solution

1. Configure DNS server address on Agent for VMware side: open appliance console from vSphere client -> go to networking section -> set DNS server address.

After that you can switch to command prompt via Ctrl+Shift+F2/F1 (switch back to GUI via Alt+F1/F2) to confirm that name resolution works properly by issuing ping [esxihost_name]

In most cases the issue affects only appliances, since Windows-based agents typically have DNS server settings configured properly and if not then they should be configured using standard Windows network configuration utilities.

2. You can also connect to Virtual Appliance using WinSCP utility and add corresponding IP/name combination into /etc/hosts file on appliance side:

  1. Download the WinSCP utility from http://winscp.net/eng/download.php and install it on a Windows machine. WinSCP (Windows Secure CoPy) is a free and open source SFTP, SCP, and FTP client for Microsoft Windows.
  2. Go to Virtual Appliance console and press CTRL+SHIFT+F2 to switch to the command line interface. In the command line of the Virtual Appliance type this command:
    /bin/sshd
  3. Launch the WinSCP utility on the machine where you installed it.
  4. In the host machine field type your Virtual Appliance IP, the same as in the vSphere console. The default login:password is root:root .
  5. The protocol should be set to SCP and then click on log in.
  6. You will get a window with all the directories of the Appliance (Windows Commander-like interface)
  7. Open the /etc/hosts file in WinSCP text editor (F4) and add the necessary IP/name combination(s).
