Backing up VMware virtual machines

Thread needs solution

Hi everyone. I'm new with Acronis and I'm testing the Cyber Protect Advanced 15 version. Just a simple question to clarify. When we deploy manually the Acronis Agent for VMware virtual machines running Windows. Which is the correct scenario?

- Install Agent for Windows and Agent for VMware.

- Install only Agent VMware.

Thanks in advance !

Hello Albert,

sorry for the delayed response! Installing the Agent for VMware as an Appliance is the recommended in most cases. One virtual appliance will image all VMs on the protected host. Such backup will be faster than imaging of the same amount of VMs via Agents installed into the guest OS since Appliance will use the hot-add method of imaging when the virtual drives are directly attached to the appliance and imaged.

Installing the Agent for VMware on a physical machine running Windows is only recommended for the purpose of an offloaded or LAN-free backup.

  • Offloaded backup

Use if your production ESXi hosts are so heavily loaded that running the virtual appliances is not desirable.

  • LAN-free backup

If your ESXi uses a SAN attached storage, install the agent on a machine connected to the same SAN. The agent will back up the virtual machines directly from the storage rather than via the ESXi host and LAN. For detailed instructions, refer to "LAN-free backup".
