Licensing and Upgrade Questions

Thread solved

We're running Cyber Backup 12.5.  We have: Acronis Cyber Backup 12.5 Standard - PERPETUAL LICENSE- VIRTUAL HOST 3

(We actually have 3 separate accounts with the same licenses and counts in place for different offices.)

I do see the "Free Upgrade" option when logging into the accounts and viewing our existing products.  It looks like we're eligible to move to "Acronis Cyber Backup 15 Standard Virtual Host".

I found kb acronis com/content/3699 with some upgrade eligibility info, and it links to kb acronis com/content/59814 for upgrading to Cyber Backup 12.5.  There's no link for the Cyber Protect 15 upgrade table, but I found it at kb acronis com/content/65255 .  Is kb acronis com/content/65255 up to date and correct? (If so, you should update kb acronis com/content/3699 with a link to it.)

I haven't looked into Cyber Protect 15 at all yet, and I'll likely wait a few months before trying to upgrade.

1:  From what I can tell, the licenses are a 1:1 replacement for what we have now, so we can just move from 12.5 to 15 at any point (our maintenance subscription is paid up until early 2022).  Is that correct?

2:  What happens to our existing licenses once we upgrade? Are they inactivated immediately? Or are we able to run the old version and new the new version concurrently.  For example, I may want to set up a new, separate Appliance to  test the new version before trying to upgrade our existing instances.  Or, if we encounter issues after upgrading to the new version, would I be able to use the old license and create a new instance of the old version to roll back to?

3:  We have perpetual licenses, but we bought a 3-year maintenance support plan back in 2019, I believe. Does that mean our upgraded licenses will be "perpetual licenses", or will they be "subscription licenses"?

4:  I'm looking at the general info for Cyber Protect 15, but I can't find too many details regarding the "Virtual Host" features. We only use Acronis for our VMs, and it works fine.  Is there any significant new functionality specifically regarding VMware (we don't use KVM or Hyper-V) that we might want to take advantage of?  If not, that's fine.  I just want to make sure I'm not missing out on any significant new features or changes if I decide to wait a few months to upgrade.

5:  Is Cyber Backup / Protect 15 able to backup physical host configurations again?  Older versions of Acronis running against vSphere/ESXi 5, 5.5, and maybe 6.0 were able to do this.  It would backup the actual host VM.  I believe sometime around 12.5 and vSphere/ESXi 6.5 this feature was dropped.  I recall asking about it, and being told that it was due to changes in vSphere/ESXi and that it might return in a future release.  Is this feature back in Cyber Backup  / Protect 15? (We're running ESXi 6.7.)

Side note:  It's pretty annoying to have to remove the links to your own Acronis documents.  I kept getting the "You are not allowed to place hyperlinks inside the text, please, clear them." message when trying to include them above.

Thanks

Hello Brian,

thank you for posting on Acronis forums!

Thank you for this notice! We have already linked KB 3699 with KB 65255.

1:  From what I can tell, the licenses are a 1:1 replacement for what we have now, so we can just move from 12.5 to 15 at any point (our maintenance subscription is paid up until early 2022).  Is that correct?

Yes, you can move to Acronis Cyber Protect 15 at any point while your maintenance is active. Please refer to this licensing/upgrade FAQ for more details: https://kb.acronis.com/content/65662

2:  What happens to our existing licenses once we upgrade? Are they inactivated immediately? Or are we able to run the old version and new the new version concurrently.

Both software versions cannot be installed concurrently on the same system. We recommend that you install trial Acronis Cyber Protect Appliance (all-in-one Appliance) to test AMS and Agent on the same VM. You will be able to downgrade only perpetual Acronis Cyber Protect 15 (Cyber Backup edition) licenses to Acronis Cyber Backup 12.5.

3:  We have perpetual licenses, but we bought a 3-year maintenance support plan back in 2019, I believe. Does that mean our upgraded licenses will be "perpetual licenses", or will they be "subscription licenses"?

Yes, you will be able to receive a free upgrade at your Acronis account during your valid maintenance period. Please also refer to this article for detailed instructions on how to upgrade to Acronis Cyber Protect 15 from previous versions of Acronis Cyber Backup.

There have not been implemented significant functionality improvements for VMware. Please see full feature comparison list here: https://kb.acronis.com/content/65304

5:  Is Cyber Backup / Protect 15 able to backup physical host configurations again?

ESXi configuration backup is not supported for VMware vSphere 6.7. This limitation remains for Acronis Cyber Protect 15: https://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/AcronisCyberProtect_15/index.html#39960.html

Hello. I also have a question regarding AC15 licensing.

In version 12.5, I made copies of 12 sql databases that work on 1 host without any problems, and now it turns out that I need a separate license for each database?

"The protection plan cannot be applied or updated for 12 devices as the device has no license. To change the license manually, select the device and then go to Details → License."

This is still 1 server with 2 SQL instances and a total of 12 SQL databases.

Hello Przemyslav,

thank you for posting on Acronis forums!

The licensing scheme is not changed for Acronis Cyber Protect Advanced 15 Virtual Host edition:

Virtual Host (Advanced edition)

1 license per one physical host and all virtual machines (VMware, Hyper-V, Scale Computing HC3, Virtuozzo *, RHEV, KVM, XEN, Oracle VM, Nutanix) with support of Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft SharePoint, Active Directory and Oracle DB included *

A single Acronis Cyber Protect license is required to back up the host and all virtual machines on 1 host along with Exchange Server/SQL Server/SharePoint Server/Active Directory databases running on these machines.

When using the product on a cluster, each host in the cluster requires a license.

Please open a case with Acronis Support Team for this issue investigation.
