Acronis said to be suddenly blocking websites because of no secure connection.

Thread needs solution

Yesterday attempted access to all websites, except Google, has been supposedly "blocked by Acronis" (we get such an image) because of no secure connection. Never have seen this before. Only one PC of two in our household is seeing this. Both PCs have the latest Acronis build. Is this something in Acronis I can fix? Or might it be malware? We use Windows Security on the affected PC, Bitdefender on the other. Nothing I've tried, including system restore from October 10, helps at all.

Welcome to these public User Forums.

It sounds as if you have Web filtering turned on in the Protection settings for Acronis on your computer.

Web filtering

Malware is often distributed by malicious or infected sites and uses the so called "Drive-by download" method of infection.

Web filtering helps to protect you from potentially harmful websites and untrusted web resources by blocking the access when you try to open them. To determine which websites are potentially harmful, Web filtering uses the Protection updates database. The Web filtering database also includes information about websites that contain fake news, scam, and phishing URLs. You can modify the rules defined in the database by configuring exceptions to the Web filtering list.

Web filtering has two modes of operation:

  • Complete block—the access to the website will be completely blocked.
  • Notify only—a notification will be displayed, but users will be able to access the website.

To configure Web filtering:

Switch on the Web filtering toggle to protect you from potentially harmful websites and untrusted web resources.

  1. From the Action on malicious URL detection drop-down menu, select what to do with detected malicious URLs.
    • Complete block – The access to the website will be completely blocked.
    • Block and notify – The website will be blocked with the ability to proceed.
  2. To configure the list of trusted or blocked websites, click Manage exceptions.
    1. To add a new URL to the list, click Add URL.
    2. Enter a valid URL name. Its domain will be added to exceptions.

Note  All addresses from the domain that you entered will be treated as trusted or blocked. For example, if you entered xyz.com as a trusted domain, all paths or sub-domains under xyz.com are treated as trusted.

    3. From the drop-down menu, select Allowed or Blocked. The allowed websites will not be scanned for threats. The blocked websites will not open, or you will get notified at such an attempt.
    4. Click Add URL.

Hello!

I am with Steve, seems to be an issue caused by the URL filters. Please check the thread. If after changing those setting the issue persists, kindly raise a ticket with our support because issues with the features should be investigated and I wouldn't advise any workaround: https://kb.acronis.com/content/8153

Best regards.

The problem was caused by the Acronis Protection Service that was turned on; I don't know how it was turned on. Once I managed to turn that service off, the problem went away. I told Acronis I want backup services from Acronis and protection from my Bitdefender software. Bitdefender in fact told me it was encountering conflicts caused by Acronis. Neither PC has had any trouble since I turned Acronis Protection Service off in both PCs. But, oddly, this morning I found that the service was turned on -- not by me! -- in the second PC. Damn it, Acronis, do backups, period. Let me handle protection my way,
