ATI 2021 Startup
I currently use ATI 2017 on an older computer....no problems.
I currently use ATI 2021 on a new computer, and it takes forever to get started. I see this message "Applying User Settings", and it takes a long time for ATI to actually execute. Since, to my knowledge, I never change my settings, why the continual delay?

Daria, thank you for your response. However, that detailed level of troubleshooting is above my paygrade. I paid good money for ATI to use as a backup tool, and it should not require so much problem investigation two months out of the box..
I can remember the good old days when ATI did exactly what it was advertised to do...backup my computer files. Now it's become too fancy and attempts to be a jack of all trades, and IMHO a complicated master of none.
My ATI 2021 is working once it gets started. But I still don't understand why I see this message "Applying User Settings" every time it starts. Since I never change my user settings, why can't ATI apply them once and be done?

Dear Durago,
Thank you for the response. We would clarify is there any problem (any error) when you see the message?

There is no problem that I can see when the message appears, only a progress bar. And it takes a long time (approx 80 seconds) for the ATI Backups screen to finally appear. And when the Backups screen does appear, I get the waiting hourglass for another 60 seconds before I can move my mouse cursor around on the screen.
I just don't have any of these delays with ATI 2017.

Durago, the most likely explanation for the delays during the start of ATI is that it is searching for associated backup files on your attached disk drives.
You could test this by disconnecting as many drives as possible leaving only the main OS drive then see if the start time is faster?

Steve, thank you for your response. That sounds like a logical explanation. But I have 4 external drives attached to my 2021 computer, and I don't wish to disconnect those every time I start ATI 2021. Is there anyway to turn that search off?
On my 2017 computer, I have 3 external drives attached and startup is fast (approx 10 seconds).
As I implied earlier, ATI use to be an efficient program to run, now it has become a behemoth (140 seconds to load versus 10 seconds for ATI 2017).

There is no option to stop the scan of connected drives unfortunately! The suggestion to disconnect your 4 external drives was mainly to prove the point rather than being a long term method to employ. The size of the drives may also be a factor here, so if you could test with just the largest drive disconnected that would also show if there is any improvement in startup time?

Steve, you were spot on! Per your suggestion, I disconnected two of my external drives, both being 2TB Transcend drives that were physically easy to reach. One of the drives was used for File History and the other for Security Camera video data.
Sure enough, the time required to load my User Settings was reduced from 140 seconds to 30 seconds, And the subsequent time required to move my mouse cursor around on the screen was reduced from 60 seconds to zilch....I could move my cursor immediately.
But now I am saddened by the fact that there is no ATI option to stop the scan of connected drives. Seems like someone would have thought of that possible need.

The one remaining question here is why Acronis is scanning these external drives? Is this to look for .tib / .tibx files that may be stored on them, or is this a part of Active Protection or the new Cyber Protect feature introduced with ATI 2021? Only Acronis will be able to answer that question!

But based on my excellent experience with you in years present and past, I thought you were Mr. Acronis!!

Steve, I tried to contact Acronis Support on this issue, but the screen I finally reached said ATI 2021 was not a supported product. What is that all about? Do you have a recommendation for how I can go about contacting Acronis?

Your options for contacting Acronis are:
To use the Feedback option found in the ATI GUI Help section.
To contact Daria Sorokina as the forum moderator, who has also commented on this topic to ask that the concern raised be passed on to the appropriate team (but with the understanding that Acronis would only address or resolve it in the then currently supported product, i.e. ACPHO at this time!).

@ Daria Sorokina - As initially reported in this thread, my ATI 2021 takes a long time to get started. Steve has helped me determine that this delay is caused by the fact that ATI is searching for associated backup files on my attached disk drives.
I have four (4) connected drives, but only one of these contains ATI files. The other three deal with Win 10 File History, Windows Backup/Restore, and Security Camera Data Files.
So how can I stop ATI from scanning all four drives? Thank you.

Dear Barry,
Thank you for the question. In this case we would suggest installing trial version of Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office in order to check whether the issue is reproduces.

Daria, can I install the trial version on the same computer that I just installed my ATI 2021? Since I paid good money for ATI 2021, I certainly don't want to mess it up.
And then what happens when the trial version is finished?
Thank you.

Barry you can install the trial version on the same computer, but it will overwrite the ATI 2021 installation. To go back to ATI 2021 you will have to uninstall ACPHO, the restart the computer, and then reinstall ATI 2021. If you have problems, then you can uninstall ATI 2021 then use the cleanup utilit, (you probably will not need to edit the registry, so do not do so unless problems persist), then restart the computer then reinstall ATI 2021.
You should save your settings before installing ACPHO (this has the settings for backup tasks). After reinstalling ATI recover the backup. This done on the Settings "page" of ATI; it is the one at the bottom.

Ian, thanks for your response. However, that's just more work/effort than I want to expend.
Fact is, I paid good money for ATI 2021, and it has a bug that no one will try and fix. ATI 2021 SHOULD NOT be taking the time to scan every external drive connected to my computer. Three of my four drives have nothing to do with ATI, and they do not contain any .tib or .tibx files.
On my other computer having three external drives attached, ATI 2017 does not exhibit this scanning bug.

What you deem a bug in the application is in fact a feature. The scanning of attached drives is not solely to search for tib/tibx files rather, the scan is looking for filesystem corruption. The disk MFT and Indexing are scanned to determine filesystem health.
The application does this so that if you decide to backup your File History disk for example and that disk filesystem is corrupted you will not be able to backup that disk. Instead you will get a error message that will likely state that you should run chkdsk on the disk to check for and fix errors.
The only time that the application scans for tib/tibx files is on first install of the app. It does this so it can locate any backup files found on the system and will show those files to you in the Backup tab of the application.
You are correct that TI 2017 did not do this but TI 2017 would backup a corrupted disk with no indication of that corruption. In this case such backups could not be recovered successfully. This is why the scanning of disk was introduced in later versions.
How are these disks attached to your PC? The method of attachment can have a huge impact on performance of the app.

Bob, I believe you are correct in your assessment of what Acronis is doing during startup of the GUI application but it is the lack of communication to inform the user of this activity that is the core issue here!
Acronis could have put out a status message to indicate this activity including a progress bar to inform users, or perhaps could do this type of health check scan activity in the background after the main GUI has been launched, thus making it more transparent to the user (providing it didn't impact on normal user activities).
The scan could also be moved to the preparation stage of any backup involving a disk being selected but again there needs to be far better communication with the user of what is actually being done and not as it is today with either 'Preparing....' 'Calculating....' etc! This would allow the main GUI to start quickly and would avoid adding additional stress to drives not involved in any backup activity. Scanning all attached drives on every Acronis GUI launch surely is overkill as well as adding to user frustration with the launch time etc.

Enchantechl, you may call it a feature, but I still call it a bug. I don't want ATI messing in any way with my other drives until such time that I might decide to back them up. To use your example, if and when I decide to backup my File History disk, then is when ATI should scan that disc to determine filesystem health. NOT EVERY TIME I start ATI (which I schedule weekly).
I would not have purchased ATI 2021 had I known of the intrusive bug. I would have found and purchased another copy of ATI 2017, which is a good program.
To answer your question, these four external disks are attached to my computer via USB 3.1 cables and ports.
