Change of external target disc name

Thread solved

First the scenario: A full disc backup (intermittent scheme) is run daily. The target disc drive (USB connection) has been designated the letter "G". I decide to remove some USB external drives that aren't being used, so they are unplugged. The "G" drive is also disconnected from the computer for a few minutes.

When the "G" drive is reconnected, the computer assigns it a new drive designation, "E". So my question is which of these three options will occur:

A) Will Acronis automatically recognize the new "E" drive as the target drive (which was named "G"), and simply continue on as normal in the last chain, or

B) Will I have to assign the new target drive name ("E") in Acronis, and if I do, will Acronis automatically "sense" that the drive already has the Survival Kit on it, and that backups already exist on the drive, and pick up where it left off in the chain, or

C) Will I need to reformat the target drive and start from scratch?

Thanks for the help.

Baron, the best solution here is to go into Windows Disk Management and change the drive letter back to 'G' and then it should keep that letter going forward.

Acronis recognises drives via the partition GUID (unique identifier) which should allow it to find the drive but will probably still require you to reselect the destination using the changed drive letter if left at 'E'.

Acronis will recognise that a Survival Kit partition is present on the drive.

You won't need to reformat the drive.

Just for the sake of discussion, if I did reselect the target drive using the new designation, and you've said Acronis will recognize the existing Survival Kit, will it also recognize the existing backup chains?

Thanks again.

Yes, it will recognise the existing backup chains.
