Cloning 2 M2 SSD

Thread needs solution

Hi ;)

Never worked with this before

I have 2 identical 1tb M2 SSD - one with a Windows 10 install and a lot of installed software aprx. 175gb

The other is empty

I want to clone the one with the Win10 to the empty one.

They are both connected to my PC with M2 convertes via USB-port

Image disk1.jpg is the disc I want to clone
Image disk2.jpg is the target disc

When I go through the GUI it ends up telling me I need more space - 108mb.

See image fail.jpg

Why - and how can I solve the problem?

I am using Windows 10 and newest edition of Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office

Kind regards

Jan Overgaard

Hello!

The warning indicates that the source disk's content cannot fit on the destination disk.

Could you please share a screenshot of the size displayed on the destination disk?

Thanks in advance!

Jan, welcome to these public User Forums.

One issue that can cause the error message about needing more free space can be the presence of any file system issues on the source drive, i.e. the free space map is in error and suggests that there is less free space that is obvious.

Checking the source SSD using CHKDSK E: /F should help show if there are any issues?

Before embarking on cloning it is strongly recommended to make a full disk backup of the source SSD (to an external storage drive) so that you have a safety net in case of any further issues arising or mistakes being made.

My personal preference is to use Backup & Recovery and not use Cloning, as this doesn't require both drives to be connected, only the one being acted upon.

One further comment: what BIOS boot mode does the computer where the cloned SSD will be use have?  Is this the same mode as used by the computer where you are intending to do the cloning?  Most modern computers now use UEFI with GPT but older computers may still be Legacy / MBR BIOS boot systems.  Acronis will convert the cloned (target) SSD to match the BIOS boot mode of the system where you are doing the cloning.

You can check the BIOS boot mode by running the command msinfo32 on each computer and looking at the value of the BIOS mode setting shown in the right-hand panel.
