email notifications fail

Thread solved

I'm using true image 2013. still works and i haven't upgraded since i like the calendar log of jobs completed and status. don't have the most reliable connections, so sometimes emails don't get sent.

anyway, as often happens, acronis fails to validate one of my prior backups. usually this means i need to delete the job and start over as i've never been able to fic the issue once this happens.

so i've set up a new job and backup is working fine but i can't send an email notification authentication failed. i'm currently using gmail - smtp.gmail.com, 587, tls. since the error message usually is not helpful, i intentionally break  other fields and sent a test message. my strategy here is if i get a new error message, then the data i had before is probably correct.  so narrowing this down, i think my user email and password for the extended server settings is not validating. but i've checked and checked and checked what i input and can't get a test message to send.

any help on how to debug my situation would be appreciated.

Okay, figured this out. it has to do with 2 factor authentication and less secure apps. I had done this before, probably a couple of years ago and completely forgot about it. here's a link to google help that explains how to do it.

this also covers if you forgot your app password - seems like you need to recreate it. Scroll down to create and use app passwords.

i have 3 acronis 2013 jobs. it appears i used a different app password for each. don't know if i could have reused them. but i would have needed to save my password after creation, don't think you can extract them from either google or acronis to reuse them.

i believe when i created them the first time, i used task manager to find out what the job name was when the user interface was up, but not necessarily when backup was running.

in google i have the following app names that are working for me.

Acronis True Image Home (32bit)

Acronis True Image Services (32 bit)

Acronis True Image Services (32 bit) (2) - the (2) parameter was added by google when i created a new password using the app name Acronis True Image Services (32 bit) to solve my current problem
