How many incremental backups recommended before a ne full backup

Thread needs solution

A full backup of my PC takes beteen 11 hours and over 20 hours sometimes. An incremental backup takes arounf 20 minutes. Taking a full backup too often is therefore a pain. I have set the option to do a full backup after 21 incrementals. Do you think this is excessive and possibly putting things at risk?

Vic, welcome to these public User Forums.

What are you including in your 'full backup of your PC', i.e. how many disk drives / partitions?

11+ hours sounds like an extended backup time unless you are backing up across a slow network connection with a very large volume of data.

What version of Acronis are you using here?  Is it ACPHO or ATI 2021 / 2020 which create .TIBX format archive files?  If so, then having 21 incrementals is less of a risk than with the previous .TIB disk backup archive files where each incremental is in a separate file on disk.  Incrementals for .TIBX backups are automatically consolidated in a single file with the initial Full backup for that version.

If you are doing an 'Entire PC' backup with multiple disk drives included, then I would recommend dividing this into multiple backup tasks, one per disk drive, which will help make the backup operation quicker, smaller and able to be scheduled according to frequency of change.

Hello,

It's not uncommon for full backups to take longer due to the comprehensive nature of the process. Incremental backups are faster as they only save changes since the last backup. Your setting of performing a full backup after 21 incrementals helps balance backup time and data security. However, it's essential to consider factors like data volume, system performance, and data criticality. If your data changes frequently, the 21-incremental setup might be reasonable. If data loss is a significant concern, consider more frequent full backups. Evaluating your data needs and system resources will help you find the right balance.

Please also check the health of your disks and your network connection, as they greatly affect backup performance.

You can enhance backup speed by increasing the priority: https://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/ATI2023/#7969.html#kanchor92

Thanks in advance!
