I have just about had it with Acronis

Thread needs solution

I am running the latest version of the Acronis backup software on Windows 11. I have installed, removed and reinstalled it multiple times. It has frequently crashed and rebooted windows.

I analyzed the crash data through WhoCrashed and each crash reports the same data (below). When I can get the software to run, it takes several minutes to an hour to even switch from one menu tab to another when the backup is NOT running.

All hardware has been checked and rechecked. No overclocking.

Upon doing my last reinstall, I stopped before actually launching the product. I just wanted the services and drivers to load. The utilization of my backup drive jumped from 0-100% as soon as the services started. It just stays at 100%. I haven't even told Acronis that there is a backup on it yet.

If I can't solve this (I have spent days on it), I am going to dump this product. Running backups just shouldn't be this hard.

Bugcheck name: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP_M
Bug check description: This indicates that a trap was generated by the Intel based CPU and the kernel failed to catch this trap.
Analysis: Double Fault indicates that an exception occurs during a call to the handler for a prior exception. Most often this is caused by a software problem (kernel stack overflow), which means that there is a driver consuming too much stack space or there are too many drivers attached in the same stack. This is likely a software problem, but it may also be caused by faulty hardware.
There is a possibility that this is caused by memory corruption. Memory corruption can be caused by a faulty driver, faulty RAM, overheating and more.

John, welcome to these public User Forums.

What actual Acronis product and version are you using here?  The latest home user product is Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office with build #40173 for which I am not aware of other users reporting the serious issues you have described above.

Does your computer run without any errors or crashes when Acronis has been uninstalled?

Are you running other security software on your computer along with the Acronis security components?

Has the Acronis software been installed using an Administrator account?

1) I installed the latest version

2) Yes

3) Yes. Webroot. And to ensure there was no conflict, I did not install any of the security features of Acronis. I also deactivated Webroot during Acronis installation

4) Yes. An administrator account

I will also repeat the text of another post I made in this forum today below:

After upgrading my PC to Windows 11, my Acronis has become worse than non-functional. Once installed, it causes constant reboots and Kernel critical errors. BSOD. The problem seems to be with the Acronis services. As soon as the services are installed (before any credentials are entered, or a backup is started), the services lock up my USB backup drives. I mean 100% utilization. I can't determine WHICH service because the damn things restart if I end them. If I click on the drive in Windows explorer, it can take up to 5 minutes for the drive to respond. Acronis support has been AWOL. I opened a ticket nearly a month ago, and it has not been addressed. Every time I contact Acronis about the ticket they tell me they need 48 hours and they are going to send it to their "Expert team." One month later, nothing. A month without backups. I used to think very positively about Acronis products and their service level, now I'm looking for other reliable and affordable solutions, unless someone can tell me what the problem is. And yes, I have tried ALL of the standard troubleshooting methods. I was an IT pro for over 25 years.

John, thanks for the additional answers.

Just to clarify the above answer, you did a Custom / selective install of ACPHO and only installed the minimal base Backup, Recovery & Clone features with none of the Cyber and Active Protection or Try & Decide features?

I have not seen any reports of any issues related to the use of Webroot in the forums but have no experience with that product myself.

Have you tried disconnecting all USB drives before booting into Windows 11?

If you have had your support case open with Acronis for some time now, i.e. several weeks, then I would suggest escalating this issue by sending an email to Arpita Ghosh who is the Acronis Product Manager for these home office products! (Arpita.Ghosh@acronis.com).

See forum topic: Reflecting on a Post-ATI World where other users have discussed alternative solutions since the demise of Acronis perpetual licenses with the move to subscription only.

In terms of troubleshooting methods, that is more difficult because of the potential mix of different hardware and software applications that can be involved.  Ideally, installing Acronis on a vanilla Win 11 system would prove that there is no hardware component to this type of issue, i.e. memory, CPU, over-clocking etc.

There was another topic recently where the issues were caused by Malwarebytes doing some form of excessive event monitoring, but if all the Acronis protection features are not installed then that shouldn't come into play here?

You could try completely uninstalling ACPHO (again), testing that all is stable, then install a copy of Macrium Reflect Free to see if that shows any signs of similar issues?  It doesn't include any cyber protect features other than the Macrium Image Guardian for protecting its own backup image files (though not sure if that is only in the paid version?).   Note: I have both Acronis and Macrium installed on my Win 11 system without any conflicts or issues.
