I want to make sure I understand image validation

Thread solved

See image, what I have checked.

With my checked items, if I already have a Full that's been validated,

and I do a differential , will only the new differential be validated?

Or will the whole image be validated again?  Please advise.

If my checkbox selection isn't right, how do I correct them. I only want to validate the latest item, in this

case if full was already validated, I only want the current differential validated.

I've checked mine and I have the same options checked.

The screen shots show it performs a validation (in activity tab) after every backup be it full or incremental which is performed every day at 7:30pm.

For my disk restore from incremental backup, I need to have the full backup and all incremental backups to restore the disk to the incremental point I've chosen.

So, for me it imported to have validated after full and all incremental points.

** apologies it seems I cannot upload any images to the ticket.

Validation does not guarantee that a backup file will result in a successful, working recovery!

What validation does do is to confirm that the backup file that was created by the backup operation has not been changed after it was written to the storage drive / location.  It does this by reading the backup TIB / TIBX file and calculating checksum values for each block of the file then comparing those checksums with values embedded within the file.  It the checksums match, then the file has not been changed since written.

What validation cannot do is to change whether any malware, virus or corruption was present in the source data for the backup operation when it was performed.  This can also include file system issues present when a backup was created but not detected or known about.

Agree no backup is guaranteed, I perform backups every day and have 4 or 5 full versions with incremental, so I am relatively confident one will work.

I also have complimentary AV products that protect my system so I am relatively confident nothing has been corrupted. I also secure data in both cloud and local QNAS for redundancy and have a base vanilla OS/system on USB as last resort.

My view is don't rely on one thing/product as chances are it might let you down when you really need it.

That sounds comprehensive Martyn.  I take a similar approach with multiple backups to multiple different locations and using two different applications (Acronis and Macrium).
