Slowing Backup Rate

Thread needs solution

My weekly backup rate to an external SSD has slowed from 700Mbps and 14 minutes to 123Mbps and 1hr 22 minutes over the last 4 months. What could be causing this?

There are several possibilities:

  • as the drive containing the backup fills up, the caching of the SSD may slow - some SSDs use storage capacity to cache rather than dedicated cache
  • if you have set the backup to validate and have set the backup to do a full validation after each backup, the validation will take progressively longer as the number of backups increases
  • it is possible that there is a problem with the drive being backed up which is slowing down the process, particularly if, because of the problems identified, the backup is being done sector by sector rather than just the sectors that have changed
  • there could be a problem with the USB/eSATA cable to the external SSD, or Windows update may have installed a new generic Microsoft USB driver in place of one from the manufacturer - this can result in suboptimal performance; also have you change the USB port being used, if so, it may have slower rating. USB ports on the rear of Desktop PCs tend to perform better than those at the front on on the top.

There may be something in the log files that indicates there is a problem. Steve Smith gives the following advice about looking at log files:

Download a copy of the MVP Assistant log viewer tool and use this to look at the logs to see if they show any issues during the operation process?

The latest version of the new log viewer tool is at the link below.

MVP Assistant - New 2.0 with Rescue Media Builder (New Version 2.3.2)

If you have Disks & Partitions backups created on ATI 2020 or later using .tibx files, then look in the Backup Worker logs.

If you have Files & Folders backups using .tib files (or Disk backups from earlier versions using .tib files) or using Cloning then look in the Demon logs.

Other logs are shown by the MVP Assistant under the 'Active Logs' heading of the Log Viewer page of the Assistant.

The Schedule2 log contains information related to scheduled task but is one of the more difficult logs to read / work through.

Post back once you have investigated the log files.

How large (how many total files) is your backup chain?  As your backup chain grows the app performance will decrease.

Here is an update.

It is a single version scheme.

The first 35gig takes a painful 85 minutes to download and the final 43gig takes only 8 minutes.

Total download 78gig.

So there is no problem with e-sata external ssd drive.

Not sure what is going on here.
