Understanding Cloud versions

Tutorial

Hello. I am having trouble understanding cloud versions and don't know how many versions to save in the advanced options.

I successfully backed up Flight Simulator (FSX) directory which took about 18 hours. There are not a great deal of changes and I notice that the incremental back ups only take a short time now which is nice.

However I specified store no more than four versions on weekly backup and delete versions older than four weeks.

I feel that maybe I shouldn't delete versions at all. I never want to create a full version again if it is going to take 18 hours. On the other hand how many versions can I keep making, like indefinite incremental back ups.

Maybe I should just do a manual backup once a month when I feel there has been some minor changes.

What is the best way to do this.

Barry, the way that all Acronis Cloud backups work is that there is only ever a single Full initial backup created / uploaded to the Cloud.

After that initial full backup has been uploaded, then Acronis use a hybrid delta incremental system to capture just changed data to be uploaded, hence the much smaller increments to the data and faster uploads.

With versioning, Acronis will keep as many as you specify and when you have exceeded the number set, then the oldest changes are deleted to retain only the newer changes. Note: this will apply at a data level, i.e. if file 1 was included in the first incremental backup but never changed after that point, that change would be retained even if the other data in that backup version is deleted because newer versions of files were created that exceed the settings.  So in this sense it is not like local backups where you delete whole incremental versions. (This is my understanding but if in doubt, check this directly with Acronis Support).

Thank you so much Steve . That sounds good to me. I will go for several versions and forget about deleting versions older than a certain time then as there seems no need for that. Will see what happens.

Cheers and all best for New Year 2023.
