Acronis Local Backup to DS220

Thread needs solution

I backup 2 Windows 10 laptops to the Acronis Cloud. I have just installed a Synology DS220 and would like to add local backups from the Windows laptop to it. I am a complete newbie to this and would really appreciate a NAS Configuration for Dummies step-by-step explanation.

For example, do I create a shared folder just for the Acronis local backups and then create user credentials for each of the laptops to have access to the folder?  If I understand what I have been reading, I should avoid drive mapping and use SMB connections instead?

Any help would really be appreciated.

Thanks

Mike, my Synology NAS is an older DS215j model but running the latest DSM 7 OS, so the principle should remain much the same.

There are several actions that you should take to ensure the security of the NAS.

Create a new main Administrator user account using a name of your choosing then setup two factor authentication for that account, so that it requires both a password and an authentication code for access.

Disable the default 'admin' system account along with the Guest account.

Note: do not use the new administrator account for Acronis!

Create a dedicated account to use with Acronis for your backups that does not match any account on your Windows laptops for either user name or password!

Create a new shared folder to store your Acronis backups and give the new Acronis user account read/write access to that folder, then create additional sub-folders within the shared folder, one for each laptop to keep their backups separate and avoid confusion.

Finally, in the File Services area of the NAS Control Panel, click on Advanced then on SMB and check that you have SMB 2 / 3 shown for the min / max protocol settings along with having WS-Discovery enabled on the first panel.  This should let you see the NAS in the Acronis GUI panels.
