Acronis True Image 2021 Error While Opening Configuration File

Thread needs solution

Hello,

New Acronis User here. I´ve been trying to backup my files using The "Archive" Tab Tool but every time I´ve tried to start the process it fails with the same error "Error While Opening Configuration File".

I´ve tried the following suggestions:

* Reinstalling Acronis with the lastest version (BUILD 39287). I also used the Acronis Cleanup Toolkit to remove any traces befores reinstalling.

* Repairing the installation with the latest .exe version.

* Exporting and importing the configuration file in Setting>Backup Settings Transfer>Saving and the Importing.

So far, the same message appears. I´ve tried to check the logs with notepad++ "C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Logs" but I haven´t found any related error line so far.

One specific thing for my case is my laptop has dual booting (Linux + Win11 with acronis 2021 installed). Maybe this could cause the reported behaviour?

Currently I´ve only use without problems the backup tab functionality.

Pedro, welcome to these public User Forums.

Please can you clarify exactly what you are doing here?

The log files show that you look to be creating a normal Acronis backup (D:\ASUS-LAPTOP.tibx) of your laptop disk drive and this has been successful apart from an initial issue with creating a Microsoft VSS snapshot.

The Archive option is a different tool altogether and is not used with the Backup option.

I´v been trying to archive my files with the Archive tool but everytime that I click the green "Archive" button the mentioned error appears. The destination drive is an external USB (E:)

Pedro, please download a copy of the MVP Assistant log viewer tool and use this to look at the Acronis Configuration panel of the tool which will show you a list of your backup task script files including one for your Archive task.

The latest version of the new log viewer tool is at the link below.
MVP Assistant update for Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office (Version 1.1.6.0)

See the example screen image from my own system showing the script configuration file for a test archive task that I setup earlier.

Hello Steve,

This is what the mvp assistant update shows in my laptop. Noted that I dont have any scripts or scheduled tasks because this is my first time using Acronis. I just want to use the archive tool in a traditional way.

Pedro, given that no scripts are shown in your screen shot then the next question is to ask if there are any .tib.tis files in the C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts folder or not?

If there are some .tib.tis files, then these should have been shown in the screen image which raises a further question: was ATI 2021 installed from an Administrator account and being run from the same as required for correct operation and documented in the user guide?

Hi Steve,

Yes, the installation was done with an administrator account. I´ve just reinstalled again following the documentation guidelines that you mentioned but the same error keeps appearing. Also, the scripts folder stills empty. Do I need those tib.tis files to use the archive tool?

Pedro, yes, the script .tib.tis files are created whenever you create an backup or archive operation and them being 'missing' is the reason for the error message you are being given.

See the following KB documents that may be relevant here if you have any security applications that is stopping them from being created.

KB 36429: Acronis Software: exclude program folders and executables from antivirus and other security programs

KB 46430: Acronis Software: Making Acronis Products Compatible with Antivirus Software

Hi Steve,

I´ve done the process and file exclusion in windows security but the results are the same "Error While Opening Configuration File".

I´ve noticed that the main backup function works without problems and the script was created in the C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts folder. Is there a log folder where I cant check if the problem is the installation or some "archive tool" service not starting correctly?.

I´ve also installed the same version of Acronis in another Win11 machine resulting in the same Archiving error.

Pedro, the MVP Assistant tool can show you all the various logs in a formatted way.

I had missed the point that this was being done on Windows 11 even though you did mention it previously in your opening post before doing so again above!

Only ACPHO is supported for use with Windows 11 and as ATI 2021 is also out of support, any new bugs are unlikely to get fixed by Acronis!

I don't have ATI 2021 installed on a Windows 11 system but can do a test with ACPHO and ATI 2019 with that version of Windows, though that will be tomorrow as is getting very late here in the UK.

Tested ACPHO Archive feature on Windows 11 and all worked correctly (same as ATI 2021 on Windows 10).

Tested ATI2019 Archive feature on Windows 11 and all worked correctly.

I have captured screen images from both the above on Win11 showing all is working normally.  I don't have a Win11 system with ATI 2021 installed and don't have a spare license to install it as already have 2021 installed for my 3 licenses but all on Win10.

Further testing.  I uninstalled an older copy of ATI 2015 on a Win 11 Hyper-V VM and installed a trial copy of ATI 2021 in its place.

Attempting to create an Archive of a few selected files gives me the same error for Error opening the configuration file, so looks to be broken for the combination of Win 11 and ATI 2021.
