Acronis True Image - Old NAS using SMB

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I am using True Image 2021 and I have an old NAS that I want to keep using. I am currently unable to Map Network Drive to get my NAS recognized in Windows 10 because by default SMB1 protocol is not enabled. I think that the SMB1 protocol might expose my computers to attacks (as far as I can tell).

My question is, does Acronis True Image (which includes Active Protection) protect me in this situation? Is it safe to enable SMB1 so I can use my older NAS knowing that Active Protection will take care of any attacks?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Andrew, SMB 1.0 is deemed to be both insecure and vulnerable hence why support for it has been dropped by Microsoft etc, therefore if you are using an old NAS that only supports this access protocol, you should keep your use of the NAS to a limited set of activities.

The NAS should be kept isolated from any internet access, i.e. restricted to only your local network.  You should not have any user accounts on the NAS that match any accounts on any of the client PC's accessing it, i.e. use a dedicated NAS user account when access from a client is needed!

I would recommend not mapping any Windows drive letters to the NAS - that is not necessary for using it for backup by Acronis and reduces the risk of attack from the client side.

Using Acronis Active Protection can help protect your Acronis backup files on the NAS.

Take a read of webpage: How to kill off SMB1, NetBIOS, WINS and *still* have Windows' Network Neighbourhood better than ever - which you may be able to implement on your NAS.
