Advice for SSD clone

Thread solved

Hi, I'm looking for advice on the best way to replace an M2 SSD that is failing in my computer.

My general setup is;

  • a motherboard with only one M2 slot
  • an SSD in the M2 slot that boots the computer, loads Win10 Pro, and has a system (C:) partition, two recovery partitions, and an EFI system partition. The OS and program files are on the C: drive.
  • Two HDDs in RAID 1 managed by Intel Rapid Storage Technology that is my D: drive for data
  • I use Acronis Cyber Protect to backup to a Synology NAS on the local network

So I'm guessing I'll have to clone or backup the failing SSD somewhere, replace the SSD, boot from rescue media, then clone the copy back to the new SSD. The replacement SSD is the same size as the original.

Can anyone advise on the best course of action? Clone or backup? To the NAS, D: RAID drive, or something else? There is room on D:, and I have spare SATA and USB HDDs to use if necessary.

Thanks for everyone's help, regards,

Ian.

Ian, welcome to these public User Forums.

See forum topic: Steve migrate NVMe SSD where I have documented (with images) the process that I have used multiple times for my own laptops using Backup & Recovery.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the welcome and the advice. I had to google "off-line backup" and another one of your posts came up explaining the process, so a double thank you!

Regards, Ian.
