Help me out here

Thread needs solution

Hi All,

I am a 12 year user of Acronis.  Until a week ago I had been using Version 16 perpetual license. All I use the program for is once a month I backup my primary hard drive; I then shut the program down.  Don't need "cyber security" or background backup, etc.

I just upgraded to Acronis 2021 subscription and have noticed a few things that give me concern.

  • Without even starting or signing into the program, there are no fewer than 10 processes/tasks running in the background that I can't seem to disable or stop.
  • The program is only usable while one has an internet connection and signed on to my account; trying to use the program offline doesn't work and it reverts to the Trial version.

In the end, I have to say that the new Acronis is extremely invasive at best and possibly tracking/logging what I am doing at worst.

If anyone can help me pare this program down to a simple backup program either through program settings or a way to use it offline I'd appreciate it.  It would seem that Acronis has become extremely bloated without a way to customize the program to use just the features one might want.

Believe me, I have tried all of the settings available in the program and at my online account.  Even turning off "All Protection" to no avail.  The processes/tasks continue to load and run outside the use of the program and I still have to sign on to my online account to use the program outside of the "Trial Version".

I'm considering getting my money back and reverting to version 16 with a perpetual license, or looking elsewhere for my backups.  I have had no complaints, only compliments, about Acronis until now.

Thanks in advance for your help/comments!

Frank, welcome to these public User Forums.

All Acronis subscription products require an internet connection!

If you don't want all the extra Acronis Cyber Protection features found in ATI 2021 then your options are very limited!

You can elect to 'turn off protection permanently' in the Protection panel of the ATI 2021 GUI but should realise that this does not stop any of the extra background Windows Services related to the feature, and these will continue to be active looking for updates etc!

You can request a refund and terminate your subscription provided you are within the 30-day cooling off period, then revert back to your ATI 2016 perpetual version.

You could wait and see what the successor to ATI 2021 brings to the party in September with the rebranded new Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office product which may offer better options to control the extra security features???  This may also be a subscription only product as Acronis have previously stated that they will no longer provide perpetual licensed products!!

I just upgraded to Acronis 2021 subscription

You've really downgraded to an inferior product, which you really should have stayed with 2016 as there is NOTHING worthwhile in newer versions (and please ignore the people shilling the newer versions or those blatant fake positive reviews of True Image 2021, which look like money was switched hands to promote such a shoddy product).

You can easily make an x64 WinPE (including adding drivers for newer storage devices) with True Image 2016, so you are really future proof but Acronis have to make money, so they'll bloat the hell out of their software with system anti-virus nonsense and other gimmicks.

Sorry I couldn't be positive but to be direct. Either get a refund or stick with an inferior product.

Thanks for your honest comments!!  As a result I have gotten a refund on 2021 and reverted back to 2016 perpetual license; this is a loss to Acronis since I won't be handing them a subscription fee yearly.  Perhaps they will reevaluate what they have done to their program to make it so invasive:

  • Allow users to decide how they want to use the program and turn off all other features, including the associated processes and tasks.
  • Allow users (as with every other program out there) to use the program without being connected to the internet.

Thanks again for being up-front and honest with your comments, I had pretty much reached the same conclusion and you guys put the icing on the cake.

In some regions Acronis sell perpetual licences for some of its products including True Image through third party sellers; for some reasons you cannot purchase it directly from Acronis. Australia is one of the regions where non-subscription version is supposed to be available.
