Nonstop – not enough space, access denied

Thread needs solution

Hi over a while!

Windows 10 (19044), Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office (build 40107, latest to the moment). Well, as this nonstop-option appear (idea good) I have problems with it (already in days of True Image naming). It does stop (in error) during a regular (longer backup), it happens … after every few days, even over a day (regular backups taking place every night). Also, I have USB disk for it (for nonstop backup), dedicated, as can’t limit space for nonstop to use, it might take all space (strange Acronis haven’t thinking about to limit space it can take, over a years!). Before this latest build when USB disk was fulfilled, I just deleted data-files and start nonstop over, not very convenient … ok, but … now I see all these files is “taken by Acronis” and access is denied, so … I can’t delete these, nonstop, obviously, in error (not enough space). I don’t want to restart my computer every time because of this kind of problem nor delete nonstop-backup (not sure it does free files, though) because of settings in there. Stopping nonstop-service didn’t help either.

Any ideas how to proceed in this situation, if ever there is a solution?
Also, can anyone tell, have Acronis plans to add some options to nonstop-backup to check (~ bring to heel) it.

More thanks, Alar.

Also, can anyone tell, have Acronis plans to add some options to nonstop-backup to check (~ bring to heel) it.

I am not aware of any specific changes that Acronis is intending to implement - any changes would be part of unification project (moving to the same code base as used by Cyber Protect 15). It is a while since I tested Cyber Protect 15 so cannot say what options (if any) are available.

but … now I see all these files is “taken by Acronis” and access is denied, so … I can’t delete these, nonstop, obviously, in error (not enough space). Have you tried (temporarily) turning off Active Protection before attempting to delete the files? Also, you could try deleting the backup task (my recollection is that with Non-Stop backup you can only delete task + delete files, unlike other backups where you can delete the task but retain the files.

Also, how are you using nonstop backup? When I have used it I have only applied it to one or two folder (and their sub-folders)?

Looking at the documentation (user guide pp 43-46) there are situations where non-stop backup is temporarily suspended; it tries to resume after 1 hour, and if cannot will make a further 4 attempts at one hour intervals. This raises the possibility that the power settings for the USB drive may have changed and it does not wake up fast enough for Acronis to reconnect. There may be something in the log files that will be of assistance; you can look at the log files using MVP Assistant - New 2.0 with Rescue Media Builder (New Version 2.2.1).

@Steve Smith offers the following advice on which log files to consult:

If you have Disks & Partitions backups created on ATI 2020 or later using .tibx files, then look in the Backup Worker logs.

If you have Files & Folders backups using .tib files (or Disk backups from earlier versions using .tib files) or using Cloning then look in the Demon logs.

My recollection is that non-stop backup creates *.tib files, so you probably need to look at Demon logs. There may also be other log files specific to nonstop backup.

PS Have you considered using Windows File History (available, if I recall correctly in Wndows 10 and 11)?

Hi and thank You for support!

(1) Nope, switching Active Protection (via Acronis UI) off does not free these files.

(2) Strangely nonstop goes into error usually after midnight, but regular backup is started at 22 (10 PM). “The parameter is incorrect.”, link for solution does not help.

(3) Haven’t check logs, truth.

(4) Yes, for nonstop I have selected just some files/folders.

(5) Windows File History, good pointing, though – haven’t tried it as … Acronis, I hope, keep me safe. Also, this Files History … it is not so straightforward as other backup solution, seems to me, I could be wrong.

For releasing files … I don’t see other option as uninstall Acronis (in full) or trying to disable services at start (I could stop all services on the go beside the Active Protection, I mean via Windows Services).

A bit out of this topic. Also, what I saw with ATI and now, after some … days/weeks working Windows getting very slow. After I uninstalled Acronis soft (ATI in these days) … computer did work out weeks well. No-no, I really appreciate Acronis (and even this slowness problem could be hidden elsewhere), but … they can do better. True, all we can. =)

More thanks, Alar.

Did a search for the term "The parameter is incorrect" in the Knowledge Base and one possible problem can be with pre- and -post commands. However, as far as I am aware non-stop backup does not use them; however they could be used when trying to restart non-stop backup after is has paused itself.

On the problem of deleting the old files, have you tried reconfiguring the installation so that there is a minimal install. I assume that when installing ACPHO when running the installer, you did so as Administrator; failure to do so can cause many odd things to happen.

Ian

Hi and thanks again!

Yes, I did install all as administrator and latest update as I have done … years before and regular backups (I’ve a few) working as should. Well, anyway, I removed nonstop backup and files were freed and removed at once. Perhaps I’ll take a pause concerning nonstop backup option. Yes, good to have an option to backup files not just once per day, but … more often as I’ve just one-disk-system (not mirrored etc.), perhaps You’re right I should take a deeper look for Files History, not sure, though.

More thanks, Alar.
