Problem with orphaned BU files

Thread needs solution

Please help with deleting orphaned BU files.

Have used Acronis True Image to create BU's on external NAS for many years.  Realized somehow that phones had backed up in (2017-2019) to "C\users\MyUsername\AppData\Local\Acronis\Acronis Drive\MyCellphoneName"    instead of an external drive and has gobbled up about 60% of the drive on my Win10 home system updated to latest version.

A quick check of my current True Image 2019 backup list shows the the BU files going to another drive, so the original BU must have been removed some time ago.   I don't really need these files, but I successfully copied them from C drive to external NAS anyway and attempted to delete the C drive copies, but security permissions won't allow me to delete these from the C drive.   I have about 22 of these BU folders (example foldername:  8-31-2022 6_35_56 PM)

Using my primary account and the only User Admin account, I tried:

1. Cutting and pasting folder and and individual files in mass to another drive.   It copies successfully, but when windows10 tries to automatically delete the original data I get error message:   "The disk is write protected.  Remove the write protection or use another disk"

2. I tried using file explorer to manually delete the parent folder (failed), then deleting the files in mass (failed), deleting the files individually.  Error Message:  "Can't Read from the source or file Disk"   However, the computer allows me to open or copy from these files at will.

2. 3rd party software to delete.  Error Message:  (Same as "2)   Attempted to use IOBit unlocker and repeated delete process - no change.   Attempted forced delete using Admin enabled Command line: C:\WINDOWS\system32>del /f C:\users......     System asks if I'm sure, I say Yes.    Failed.  Error Message:   A device attached to the system is not functioning.

3. Simply tried to change Folder and subfile attributes.  Error message:  "An error occurred apply attributes to the file:  C:\users\...    A device attached to the system is not functioning."

4. Security Share permissions show that "Administrators" and "Everyone" have full control while a quick check under Editing specific admin, System, authenticated users and user accounts under Security Groups or User Names details show  that all boxes under deny are blank and all boxes under Allow are blank except for Special Permissions.  Tried to change security permissions for the "Acronis Drive" folder incl directories and all sub folders/files (Note: These folders only contain these user specific BU folders.)  Error Message: "An error occurred while apply security information to: .....  Failed to enumerate objects in the container.  Access Denied"

5. Added new User (my specific username w/ admin access) successfully.   Permissions were defaulted to blank.  Tried to change permissions to Allow Full Control and received error message:  " (Same as #4 above).

6. Tried to change ownership of a BU folder from Administrator to my specific Username with Admin rights replacing owner on subcontainers and objects.  Error Message:  (Same as #4 above).  Tried again "Disabling Inheritance"  (Same as #4 above)  Tried all of #6 with Replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permission entries from this object.   Error Message: (Same as #4).

7. Went to explorer, clicked C drive/permissions and changed ownership of the entire C drive from system admins to my specific admin username.  All goes well.  As expected it choked at several key points (i.e. Windows defender, files currently in use, etc)  and stops again at this Acronis Drive. Same error message.

8. Tried admin enabled command line:  TAKEOWN /F "<FolderPath>" /R /D Y        Error Message:   Error: Access is denied.  Realized that Acronis Drive protection was on.  Turned off.  Re-attempted.  No change.

At a loss. Don't know what to do from here.  Any assistance appreciated.

Tks

David, welcome to these public User Forums.

Turn off Acronis Active Protection within the main Acronis GUI - Protection settings.  AAP will prevent any operations against .tib / .tibx files or other related files in Acronis folders.
