Should I defragment my external backup HDD drive

Thread needs solution

I recently noticed that my new (3 months old) external HDD that I use for my daily incremental backups (6 increments in each chain with retention of 4 chains) is repeatedly becoming significantly fragmented (22% this time), even though I had scheduled weekly optimisation for it.  I also noticed that something unknown to me had turned off the scheduled optimisation.  Last time I noticed this (possibly 2 to 3 weeks ago), I manually defragmented the disk, and turned the scheduled optimisation back on.  This is somewhat of a mystery, as before I replaced the HDD with a newer model from the same manufacturer (WD), I did not experience this.  I should also mention that my backup disk is only about 40% used.

My questions are:

1. Should I be concerned about this?

2. Should I manually defragment the HDD if the scheduled optimisation continues to be turned off by some unknown agent?

Hallo Rodolfo Valerio,

Normale Festplatten sollten regelmäßig defragmiert werden. Eine fragmentierte Master File Table kann Daten auf einer Festplatte unbrauchbar machen.

Normal hard drives should be defragmented regularly. A fragmented Master File Table can render data on a hard drive unusable.
