Universal Restore Error - Can't Find Operating System on the current machine

Thread needs solution

I am transferring a GPT SSD from an old computer to a new computer.  The SSD boots on the old computer (UEFI) but on the new computer I get the BSOD with "inaccessible boot device" message.  When I run Universal Restore the Select OS block has the message "Can't find an operating system on the current machine".  Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

Tom, welcome to these public User Forums.

Sorry but what exactly have you been doing here and how are you doing it?

Acronis Universal Restore should only be used after first doing a restore of a backup of the OS SSD to a drive installed in the second / different computer, and where in the case of UEFI both computers use UEFI for boot.

See KB 65413: Acronis True Image 2021: Restoring to dissimilar hardware with Acronis Universal Restore and in particular review Steps 4 and 5 of this document.

I have an old machine (HP) that does not support UEFI and a new machine that does not support legacy boot. So I borrowed a Dell from a friend that supports both legacy and UEFI. I backed up my old machine and restored it to the Dell using MBR style disk. I then used MBR2GPT on the Dell to convert the disk to GPT. The Dell boots up fine in GPT and I confirmed it’s configuration via Disk Manager. I also set BIOS to only allow booting under UEFI. When I move the disk to the new HP it won’t boot - BSOD with “inaccessible boot device” message. So I started Universal Restore to migrate the disk but UR doesn’t see an operating system. The head scratcher is that I can plug the disk back into the Dell and it boots right up

Tom,

Can you tell us what type of SSD you have. SATA, NVME?  This may be a case of not having an appropriate driver.

Generally however it is likely that the boot order is wrong on your new HP machine.  Find out how to enter the Bios setup on the new machine and look for a Boot Order reference there.  You will need to have the Boot Order set to Windows Boot Manager to have the machine boot your SSD in UEFI boot mode.

I have a SATA SSD.  I'm trying to use Universal Restore to provide the appropriate drivers but I can't get Universal Restore to even start because it says "Can't find an operating system on the current machine".

The boot order appears to be correct on the new HP.  It is UEFI with Boot Order set in BIOS to Windows Boot Manager.  The Microsoft utility Diskpart shows all volumes on the drive are healthy and that it has an assigned drive letter of "C".

My challenge seems to be Universal Restore ...

When booting the AUR media are you also doing so in UEFI boot mode?  That is needed here.
