Upgrade to Windows 11 crash blue screen Stop Code: REGISTRY_FILTER_DRIVER_EXCEPTION What failed: file_protector.sys

Thread solved

Hi all,

I'm facing the following issue:

Trying to upgrade from windows 10 to windows 11 both with windows update or Windows 11 installation assistant crash at 85% with blue screen and the following error:

Stop Code: REGISTRY_FILTER_DRIVER_EXCEPTION

What failed: file_protector.sys

I discovered that file_protector.sys is part of your amazing product I'm using: Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office build 39703 that appears to be the latest available

Can you please help me to fix the issue so I can perform the upgrade?

Regards

Gianluca, I do not recall seeing any other users reporting any issues with ACPHO when upgrading from Windows 10 to 11, and I have not seen any issues for my own system.

I can only recommend a couple of options to move this forward:

Open a support case direct with Acronis and let them investigate the issue with you.

Uninstall ACPHO then use the Acronis Cleanup Tool to ensure that all traces of ACPHO are removed, including rebooting Windows 10 to complete that cleanup action.  Then retry the upgrade to Windows 11 after ensuring that you have a good backup to use for recovery if needed, i.e. you could make a backup using the Acronis bootable rescue media.

Hi Steve,

sorry for the later of my reply.

I've opened a support case with Acronis but nobody contacted me about that for the moment, I think it's strange since it was 1 week ago. Should I open a new one?

That was my plan to too, I'm waiting for an external HD to perform a backup, then uninstall Acronis and try again to upgrade.

I was wondering if perhaps ASZ with password could be the cause of my problems

Gianluca, I would suggest waiting on your support case rather than opening a new one.

I don't think that ASZ with password should cause this issue as that is a legacy feature unchanged for a very long time.

Hi Steve,

thanks for the suggestion, I will wait for the feedback from the support before to follow any other corrective action

Hi Steve,

I'm surprised that support is slow and providing me the troubleshoot of my issue, so I procedeed by my onw.

I discovered that is not a problem related to Acronis. I had to uninstall Comodo Internet Security perform the upgrade and reinstall the software later.

Gianluca, thanks for the update!  That is interesting that it was CIS causing the upgrade issue as I was a long time users of CIS but stopped using it on Windows 10 due to the much improved Windows Defender being fully integrated, but still have it on some older Windows 7 systems!

The old PC's are not capable of going to 10 let alone 11, so no danger of hitting the same issue!

Hi Steve, I gave CIS ago since it was stopping my windows 10 to be patched to 20H2 build so I know CIS is really effective but also produce some false positive some time. I like to much CIS as it has unique features that are missing in their concurrent
