Using bootable iso, make image and verify, but can not re-verify and restore (but can in TI2020)

Thread needs solution

Hi

I have been using True Image for years TI2020, TI2019, TI2017, TI2014 .... to get new computers setup without all the bloat and processes with tentacles. Once I figured out which key to get to bios and what bios settings to boot TI has worked great. I load a bit of the software test it, go back do it again once I know what I want, then TI, Load a bit more test, reload, install what's good TI .....

Now I am using Acronis True Image 2021 39216 Bootable ISO (also tried Acronis TI 2021 Build 39287 with same results)

used Rufus 3.17 GPT Uefi NTFS (also tried fat32) to make bootable image

Which boots to TI2021 on the new minimal system Asus maximus Z690 Extreme with i9 12900K and one SanDisk 120Gb drive (old corded mouse and keyboard to get to bios).

Which will boot and run ubutnu off a usb (trial setup no disk install), so the computer is looking good.

Then I installed Windows 11 to the SSD (minimal configuration) and that runs and looks good.

Then it was time to make my first image, I Booted to TI2021 and make a backup image to a NTFS SSD usb stick, Full backup, Max compression, split to 4.7gb, verify image, which completes successfully.

But then when I go to verify or verify and restore, or restore without verify TI2021 crashes at the verify startup.

I removed the disk and placed it in a usb adaptor, on a older computer (W10, set up with TI2019, but also works with TI2020 ) and booted with TI2021 get a crash result when verifying.

however on the older computer TI2020 with verify the images and restore on a second disk, and W11 works when the disk is installed in the new computer..

TI2020 can also verify and restore the image made by TI2021 on the new computer.

I looked at the system report but It's a bit over my head.

I have tried different destinations for the image, local disk other SSD USBs, hard disk USBs, different formatted USBs but the result seems the same.

TI and this method has always made me feel I was on solid ground and could get back to any one of my install points if I want tochange or correct what I did or need to recover.  Not being able to restore with the latest version of TI is concerning

I have spent about 3 days testing.

I am looking for some thoughts on what might be going on and how to proceed.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for looking

I intended to upload the AcronisSystemReport.zip but I now see that there is a 3MB limit and my file is 17MB and must not have uploaded.

What smaller sub part of the Zip file would help someone understand what is going on?

or what other information I can provide to help?

and I will send it

Thanks John

The best thing to do with the system report is to copy it to something like DropBox, OneDrive, Google Drive, and create a share link which you then post here. I have not had a chance to look at your initial post. I am overehelmed at the moment so will not be able to look at it for possibly 24 hours.

Now I am using Acronis True Image 2021 39216 Bootable ISO (also tried Acronis TI 2021 Build 39287 with same results)

used Rufus 3.17 GPT Uefi NTFS (also tried fat32) to make bootable image

How are you creating the ISO image here?  Or are you using the Linux based ISO downloaded from your Acronis Account?

All Acronis rescue media if being created to USB media expects only FAT32, not NTFS.

Linux based media has a number of known limitations as below:

KB 58006: Acronis software: NVMe drives in RAID mode are not detected by Linux-based bootable media and Acronis startup recovery manager

KB 46250: Acronis Linux-based Bootable Media: Troubleshooting USB HID Devices Detection Issues

KB 45330: Acronis Bootable Media Does Not Detect HDD, RAID or NIC

KB 45331: Acronis Bootable Media(Linux-based): Troubleshooting NIC Detection

KB 59947: Acronis True Image Linux-based bootable media boots into black screen after selecting any option in the option menu

Thanks for those replies

I looked at the kb articles and bootable image limitations and do not see that I am outside of the limits.

I do not have a shared account but google snyder's site stuff, my site has a link, link to “AcronisSystemReport20220212”, to the resulting report from the following test.

I have attempted to minimized the variables and do a clean retest with all the details. I am only using the iso booted on a usb stick to images 1 SATA drive with the initial setup that Windows 11 put’s on it. Results (consistent with all past tries), TI2021 will make an image and verify it as part of creating a backup, but then TI2021 can not verify the image as part of the recovery process. How ever TI2020 can verify that exact same image (and has been able to restore images)

I would like to be able to use just the TI2021 iso to make and restore an image.

John

P.S. lost some good formatting of this message when copied from word, Sorry

Details:

Make Acronis True Image 2021 bootable USB disk(as administrator on a W10 laptop computer):

Download Bootable images from page products/

Go to logged on account page – Products, Go to downloads for Acronis True Image 2021 Perpetual License

After thinking a bit, To add to that specific detail

I have three computers the new i9 12900K

and an 2019 Asus Laptop running Windows 10 and a 2017 HP Envy running Windows 10

Both basic generic setups mostly running office.

and I get the same results with may combinations of

TI2021, TI2020

computers and i

nternal or external USB hard or SSDs

I just did not document all the exact details.

but the result is always TI2021 makes a image but can't restore with verify, and TI2020 can restore with verify on the same image or one it makes.

John

I see you are using 12 generation core CPU, that mans that it uses a different disk controller for RAID (the default on many. This is know to cause problems with recovery media. See this thread: Intel VMD Raid0 drive wont show up in the True Image 2021 BootStick!

Ian

Thanks for the idea. I am using a 12 gen CPU but I am also testing on a 2019 laptop with a Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8750H CPU @ 2.20GHz   2.21 GHz and a 2017 i5-6400 and get the same thing

TI2021 will make an image of a disk but can't verify and/or restore that image.

I am not using RAID on any of the three computers I have tested on

The last message got me thinking.

I got two new 5TB drives to save images to, and that is what I was testing with the three computers.

In the past I always used 2TB USB drives because they work with my Windows XP machine.

I tried a to image with TI2021 to a 2TB drive and it completes the backup creation and verify

and Now

I  verified from the recovery tab.  I will try to do a recovery to disk now.

I see in windows 10 disk management that

the 2TB drive is listed as Healthy (Active, Primary Partition) and

the 5TB drive is listed as Healthy(Basic Data Partition)

Is there a destination usb disk limits/requirements article for TI2021 that shows a difference from TI2020?

John

John,

It is difficult to follow your testing as your descriptions are hard to follow because of there being 3 machines involved.

You say that you download the ISO boot media from your account page.  This version is a Linux based version and may well be at root of your issues here.

I recommend that you use the Bootable Rescue Media Builder tool that is installed with the TI product to create a Simple WinPE media which will create the media to a USB flash drive without using Rufus.  Boot your machines with that medium and test it.  Do your results change?

My descriptions in detail are all for 1 new computer, I just note that I get the same results on the other two machines.

As to the 2 TB drive test which TI2021 did create and verify and image, then verified the images (which is has not done before this point. )

After power down, SSD swap, and Reboot

TI2021 did not complete the verify and restore of the image made.

TI2020 did

I have never install the complete true image software, always used the retail CD/DVD and then I think it was 2020 that needed an ISO on  USB but that did not give me a problem.

But I agree with you that it might be time to load the whole system and make a bootable drive from that.

tomorrow if I get some time then.

Thanks

John,

Given this new machine is Windows 11 and the fact that the preferred bootable media for Acronis is now WinPE rather than the Linux version I would be very surprised if the Linux version would fully support Win 11.  I would encourage that when and if you do install the full app and use the Acronis media builder that you use the Simple method of creating media.
