Accidental format of 500Gb USB drive

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I want to 'undelete' my accidental formatting of my 500Gb external hard drive. I then copied a folder on the drive. How l can I undo this?

I have Disk Director and other Acronis software.

I would appreciate help

Thanks

By the way, I have done a search for the words 'Accidental Format', but surprisingly I get no hits. PLease advise me of correct search syntax if I have done this wrong.

Pete:

By 'undelete' do you mean that you want to recover the drive to the state it was in before formatting, thus being able to see all of the files and folders that used to exist on the drive before formatting? If so, you need file recovery software like GetDataBack or equivalent. Or you need an image of the drive that was created with TrueImage at some time in the past. Restoring the image will return the drive to the point in time at which the image was created.

If that's not what you meant, did you mean that you want to 'unformat' the drive, leaving it as unallocated free space? If so, just use Disk Director to delete the partition(s) on the drive. You can also "Wipe" the drive to destroy all traces of data on it.

Thanks Mark.

My terminology was not good. I meant the first.
Can you explain what Acronis recovery Expert does?
I thought it was used in situations like this?

Pete

Pete:

Recovery Expert is for recovering partitions that were deleted. So if you, for example, used to have Linux installed on your PC and you later deleted the partition and left unallocated space in its place, Recovery Expert could find the former Linux partition and recover it.

What is essentially does is to search the unallocated space on a disk looking for evidence of partitions. Once it finds a data pattern that resembles a partition it will reconstruct an entry for it in the partition table.

Unfortunately, Recovery Expert cannot recover the files from a partition that was reformatted. A format operation will delete the Master File Table that is needed to locate the sectors belonging to files on the partition. However, if you did a quick format, the files themselves may still be present on the disk. But you would need forensic file recovery software to put all the pieces back together again.

Thank you Mark

That's a really clear explanation, and I now understand.

One last quick question. Do you have a preferred choice of software when it comes to recovering the hard disk. You did mention GetDataBack but I wondered if you had a favourite?

The data I've lost (unfortunately) is important to me, but I just can't afford professional recovery. I have heard that Easus is meant to be good, but I'd value yoiur opinion because I need to do something but I can only buy once.

Thanks

Pete:

I don't really have much experience with data recovery software. I did use the trial version of GetDataBack once, and it was able to recover some files that were damaged by having bad sectors on the disk. I've also read positive comments from other users on the old TI forum.

If they still offer a trial version you could give it a go to see if it can recover any of your files. If the results are positive, then you could make a decision about purchasing the program.

One other recommendation. If you have TrueImage and another 500 GB hard disk, clone your bad disk to another 500 GB disk and then do all of your recovery operations on the clone. That way you preserve the original disk in case your recovery efforts make things worse. If the clone gets messed up really bad, just re-clone from the original and try again.
