Acronis Disk Director Suite 10

Thread needs solution

Hi
Can someome tell me if I should be able to load another copy of windows XP pro onto my laptop with this acronis software?
What I want to do.
I have a new laptop with 500GB hard drive and have now loaded on xp pro (taken off windows 7) I want to split hard drive into 3 or 4 sections, I think you call these primary patitions and then load different versions of windows onto them.
Can you tell me if these will all be totally independent from each other? By that I mean that I do not want them to be able to see each other, the reason is some of the vehicle software I use conflicts with each other.
I have asked the acronis helpdesk and they have tried to help but after about 3 days we are nowhere, some help desk staff say I should be able to do this and then some say I should partition my hard drive with xp pro when I load it from fresh.
Question. Am I expecting this software to do things that it should not? (Thinking that I am wrong with what I expected it to do).
I have read the manual and can not get it to do what the manual says, (could be me)
The problem I have is when I split the hard drive and then make the new partition active I try to carry out other steps in the OS selector software but when I reboot the laptop seems to make the first section active and if I continue it will just reload xp pro onto complete hard drive (overwrite).
Questions. When I reboot should I be able to see what partition xp is going to load on?
If I just use windows to partition the hard drive into sections will they be totally independent of each other? (no conflicts with my software)
When I reboot the laptop after carrying out what steps I can and it goes into OS selector screen (it seems to take sometime to do this how do I boot into the operating system showing) I have clicked on it, use enter and mouse buttons byt it seems to wait and then default into first partition.

Sorry for the long post and I think that I am the problem here but can someone point me in the irght direction please? I am not a computer person and just want to be able to carry out my own work on diesels.
thankyou keith.

Keith,

You should be able to do what you want with OSS.

However, it sounds like maybe the keyboard and the mouse are not working when booted to OSS. If this is actually the case, OSS may not work correctly on the laptop. You could check for a Legacy USB option in the BIOS and try it enabled/disabled. Also, you could try disabling support for CD-ROM drivers in OSS or using a USB mouse and/or keyboard.

Note: Before you begin, make sure you have a DD CD that includes the OSS programs. If you don't, use the Media Builder program to create a new CD that includes them. When using OSS, it's very helpful to have the programs available on the DD CD.

I actually prefer doing manual OS installations instead of doing them through OSS. It gives me more control and I know that OSS isn't going to get in the way if it doesn't detect something correctly.

Instructions:

  1. Deactivate OSS (you can do this from the OSS menu). Select the current XP installation as the default OS.
  2. Make sure the computer boots correctly and directly into XP.
  3. Boot to DD from the DD CD. Select to use Manual Mode (not the Automatic Mode). Create the new partition for XP (if you haven't already done so). I'll call it XP2. Set the XP2 partition as Active and the original XP partition as HIDDEN. Apply the changes.
  4. Then boot from the XP CD and install XP normally to the partition you created for it (XP2). It's necessary to let the XP installer format the partition (a Quick Format is fine), otherwise you may get an error. Also, make sure you select the correct partition (XP2).
  5. Once XP is installed, install DD and then OSS. It should find the previous installation and update it. If you are not planning on installing DD or OSS in this OS, OSS can be reactivated by booting to the DD/OSS CD and selecting the appropriate menu option.
  6. When you reboot, you should get the OSS menu with entries for both XP and XP2. Check the XP menu entry properties and make sure the XP partition is Active and the XP2 partition is hidden. Check the XP2 menu entry properties and make sure the XP2 partition is active and the XP partition is hidden.
  7. If you need to install another OS, follow the same steps, but make sure to hide all the other Windows OS partitions. In this example, XP and XP2 would be hidden and the new OS partition would be set Active. When finished, make sure each OSS menu entry has the correct settings for the partitions.

Hi MudCrab
Thank you for your help on this, I will try to carry out the steps you have given me and will post result on here. Again thank you for your help.
regards keith

Hi MudCrab
Have carried out your steps and have got second system loaded, thank you.
Still have a slight problem with some things but that could be me, but one thing, when I get to the OS selector screen and have to select system I require, how should I select it, with mouse pad it seems hit and miss?
I think you suggest a usb mouse, is that correct? Would like to be able to do it from built in key board or mouse pad if possible.

The keyboard and touchpad should work. The problem is if OSS can't interface correctly with them through the BIOS.

Trying a USB mouse would be more for a test. You would know if it worked or not (the Legacy USB setting in the BIOS may affect this). Ideally, you would want the internal devices to work.

There are some device settings in the options for OSS. You might want to try them and see if any help.

Tried USB mouse but no better. I just seems that it is hit or miss with touch pad and also slow to boot into partitions, but then I have no idea of how long it should take for the laptop to boot up from being switched off, then into acronis is loading, press Esc or F6 which does not seem to do anything and then into OS selector click on choice of system and hope, then after about 90 seconds I am in.

Keith,

Normally, it will only take OSS several seconds to load the menu. However, I have seen cases where it takes longer (usually, after the "Acronis loading..." screen, though).

Have you tried disabling the CD-ROM drivers in OSS?

Do you have any USB drives or media card readers attached? If so, you could disconnect them or disable them in the BIOS and see if it helps.

ESC and F6 not doing anything is normal for OSS. When they do work, you need to make sure to press the key before you see the message. By the time the message is displayed, it's too late.

Hi
Have been told by Acronis support staff that it could take 5 minutes to boot into system I require.
They don't mention that in the sales pitch though, theres a surprise.

I wonder if the time they gave you was to get into Windows instead of just to the OSS menu. If OSS is working properly, getting to the OSS menu should NEVER take that long and Support shouldn't be saying that it will.

Have you tried the suggestions in Post #6?
